Distortion / Demon --- any good with coil taps? Or maybe a blend pot?

Adieu

New member
plan to finally get around to installing a Distortion and Demon I have laying around as a set

Are either any good tapped? What about with a blend pot instead of a switch?

If tapping, master tap? Individual taps? Demon only?

Please advise, thx

Re: Distortion / Demon --- any good with coil taps? Or maybe a blend pot?

The Demon in neck is very good sounding taped as the coil is powerful , and the Distortion should be fine in a bright hot tele register .
So I recon to split both , but individual tap wouldn't be that interesting .

Re: Distortion / Demon --- any good with coil taps? Or maybe a blend pot?

Are these custom-made pups with an extra wire from one of the coils?

If not, then you might want to try "splitting" the coils. The Demon sounds pretty good split. Depending on what tone you like, certainly the Dist splits well. But it sounds a bit bright and brittle in the highs IMO. However, I really like the split sound of a Dist with just about any other magnet (esp. A8).

Re: Distortion / Demon --- any good with coil taps? Or maybe a blend pot?

By "blend pot" I assume you are referring to the "spin-a-split" mod.

This is a very good way to see how varying the amount of one of the coils can affect the tone and performance of a pup. I have found that I just prefer the simplicity of a coil split switch.

And the Distortion sounds great "split".

No, I mean blend pot --- "wired like an Ibanez bass".

Could be interesting, especially with individual taps.

I'm familiar with blend pots, but it wasn't making sense in the context you were using it in. So you want to gradually blend in one coil and blend the other out with one pot rather than just using the pot to control just one coil.

Your still talking about "split" not "tap".

Do you know what the difference is?

There really is a big difference between the two. If you don't have custom made Demon and Distortion pups with the extra coil lead wire, then you can't "tap" them.

No these are two distinct and separate elements I'm exploring as wiring options --- a blender between pickups, and splitter or splitters on individual pickups... possibly both for an improved HS tone

Hmmm... or maybe wire it series somehow for a Distortion-Demon hybrid-style middle position?

So, not a Tap then.......amazing how much trouble you go to in order to avoid saying you were mistaken about the terminology.

Your response makes no sense relative to what I said.

You understand that I was talking about "split" vs "tap" don't you? You keep using the term "tap" in the context of "split".

Do you even know what I'm talking about?!

I'm toning down what I was originally going to say so that Dave doesn't give me an infraction...therefore,
It seems clear to me that you don't understand what you are talking about. But, here, I'll help you:

If you wanted the middle position to somehow resemble/emulate a Dist/Demon hybrid, you would split each pup and have the normal, parallel middle position. You definitely wouldn't have the two humbuckers in series...this would give you no similarity at all to a Dist/Demon hybrid!

Re: Distortion / Demon --- any good with coil taps? Or maybe a blend pot?

Actually I am all about using correct terms here, especially when 'tap' means something else entirely. You don't usually see tapped humbuckers. For me, I like a master split switch, though- that splits both at once. I don't like too many moves to get to the sound I want.

Re: Distortion / Demon --- any good with coil taps? Or maybe a blend pot?

Yes, exactly. Keep it as simple as possible and still get the desired outcome.

I'm just the opposite with neck humbuckers. Spin-a-split is just about mandatory for me, far more versatile than the all-or-nothing of coil split. Really made it all but obsolete.

Yeeeees

Let's debate the virtues of calling it a "vee-bra-toh lee-ver" while we're at it.

But... two split buckers in series would.

Sort of?

I guess I'd still need to wire it to get an RW coil on one of em, and flip the mag while I'm at it? (Think modern SSS strat pos 2 & 4)

Re: Distortion / Demon --- any good with coil taps? Or maybe a blend pot?

have come to the point where think the only pickups that really do a good job as a split are Fishman...the actives are able to really create a split with some kick...conventionals just always sound less than up to the job split...maybe my hearing as I get older and things go start to go south....

Or we could change the subject again in attempt to divert attention from the topic at hand. But you still haven't acknowledged/admitted that you incorrectly used the term "tap".

If you want a pseudo hybrid in the middle position, you want what is referred to here as a "Virtual humbucker". ArtieToo shared a wiring diagram some years back that took the screw coil of one and the slug coil of the other and put them in series in the middle position of the switch (I think it was middle, but it was on there). I tried it myself and it was very cool.

This just tells me that you haven't really tried many humbuckers in split. There are some that sound fabulous split! Have you tried any of the Customs? The 59/C hybrid? The StagMag? The P-Rails? The Alt8? The Invader (this actually sounds better split than in series)? etc, etc.
