Distortion Mayhem set?

I have been trying to avoid a ceramic bridge again... but of all the clips I hear, this set sticks out to me and as much as I don't want to like the thing due to specs, I can't help but to dig what this does...

From real world players... I play into a JCM 800 with Explorer type guitars... mostly gibson.

Are they real 'dry' (I kinda like a little juice and fatness to my palm mutes, not super surgical) and is the neck version as sweet as I hear about?

The price is very tempting... 120 for the set, especially against MCP and all... which is more for one pickup! I have been having a lot of fun 'rediscovering' Duncans and they kinda just seem to work lol!

Saturated and cutting is how I would describe the bridge. I think it would sound great in a big slab short scale explorer.

I have the Dn in an RG550...and I can't stand it. I was hoping for a Full Shred on steroids, but sounded too vintagey to my ears.

Just my $.02

Bill Kelliher from Mastodon is using them. Listen to his solos (I LOVE 'EM) to get an idea what the SH-6n can sound like on it's own or combined with the bridge model. The SH-6b will rock hard with that Marshall! It's also a perfect match for fixed bridge guitars like yours. They aren't dry by any means and have that evil growl to them which I love.

I'd say go for it! You can't go wrong ;)

Re: Distortion Mayhem set?

If you're using a JCM 800 and an explorer you should basically listen to Mastodon to see what you'll sound like. That's what Bill uses, though the guitars switch often.

I myself use an SH6/SH2 combo, and it sounds great in the bridge. It cuts and slices and all those other verbs for severing things, but with proper EQ, it can be thick. My setup makes it impossible for a sound NOT to be thick, however, so my opinion is most likely biased. Anyway, its a great pickup that I highly recommend.

Interesting... I am all over the place as far as influence. I love tight rythem but I love fluid leads and singing solos... However the jb sounds more congested in most clips i listen to.

Re: Distortion Mayhem set?

I used the DDb in a 61 SG reissue and it was pretty big sounding. The bottom end wasn't all that big, but niether is that thin-body SG. =) with my Mesa MKIII, it was pretty damn awesome. I'm thinking about revisiting the DDb in my LP. I hear a lot of times that the DD works best with 300k pots or lower to keep the top end from becoming too piercing.

Re: Distortion Mayhem set?

dont use ceramics made in china....they use it in paint with led...like led zepplin...who eddie van halen said they needed to stay in tune.....

Re: Distortion Mayhem set?

The one thing that I found with the DD is that you can actually abuse the bass knob on the amp and not worry too much about the tone getting all sloppy.

Re: Distortion Mayhem set?

sloppy...eddie was very sloppy when he kicked sammy out...had all sorts of loose ends ends to deal width....
