Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

I like the Nazgul a lot, but the Black Winter would clearly be the next logical step in your case...it really is a modernized, tighter, slightly brighter SH-6 in many ways

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

i always heard << the Black Winter is a better Duncan Distortion >> but i don't know, i am always afraid of making a bad choice but i can't go wrong with both choices they are really good. I need to listen some more clips of the BW but somehow i've found him to sound almost like a active pickup, like less natural sounding than a nazgul or i don't know

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

You are over-thinking this. At some point, you just have to take the plunge and try one of the options out. If the result doesn't work for you, we will be better able to direct you to the next choice.

However, the videos you shared are the SH-6 all the way. If you already have an SH-6 and want to add some tightness & brightness to your sound like you said, then the Black Winter is the most obvious choice I can think of. It's literally as close to the SH-6 as you can get while delivering what you're asking.

If you want a very different sound, then the Nazgul might be worth considering, but I think you just want a refined version of the SH-6, which is what the BW is!

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Thanks for your help i am way over thinking it i admitt it's always difficult to make a choice lol

As i am not in the U.S i can't get the 21day warranty.

If i really can't get the tone i am looking for with the Distortion then i will switch for a Black Winter

But you found these link sounds very like the Distortion and i already got one so the problem must come from me..

They don't sound like the Distortion...they ARE the Distortion!

The guitars in the first two videos have Distortions for sure.

The "live" one is produced and hard to know for sure, but you can rest assured the Distortion makes an appearance there, as well :)

What does the rest of your rig look like? Amp?

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

I got a Dual Rectifier with a 4x12" Recto oversized slant and a TS9. Somehow i should be pretty close of this guy but his guitar is 27" with alder, maple and ebony while mine is 24.75 with a mahogany neck.

I feel that i am missing some brightness and tightness to get there https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3-heV2lb60s

this is 7 strings downtuned stuff

And you have the 4x12 in a bathroom?

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Yes. I got a N.O.S Power Attenuator to cut -36Db. it is perfect and don't alterate the tone 1518873551763-1673844888.jpg

NeoGeoFanatic made a video about it on Youtube

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

I had the Nazgul for a while but I couldn't stand it. It wasn't very clear to me, especially on the lower strings. I replaced it with the EMG 57/66 and that solved the problem. On a side note, I finally got to try the Distortion last night. I felt it was a more brutal and aggressive pickup compared to the Nazgul, but the lack of clear notes on the lower strings was the same. Like the Nazgul, it seems to have a mid hump or something that just keeps the lower notes from coming through. Never tried the Black Winter but in the samples I've heard, I kinda hear the same thing. Plenty of aggression but it has that same mid hump or whatever it is that the Nazgul and Distortion have.

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Hi everyone !

After my first post people suggested me to get a new pickup.

I got a ESP Eclipse with a sh1/sh6 set.

i am looking for a brighter, tighter pickup of the sh6
Distortion so which pickup i should get ?

Which pickup for this kind of stuff

thanks for your replies

Well i thought both the distortion and the nazgul lacked clarity, so black winter would be my choice

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

For your rig and especially that guitar I'd really suggest the BW,,,,,,,,more mids/less scooped.

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Curiously i always found that the nazgul was the clearest pickup of the 3, the most focused ; i've heard it against some EMG 707 and to me the nazgul seemed a better version of the 707

The Black Winter in the other hand have way better clean tones than the Nazgul

damn the 707 must really suck. the nazgul isnt clear at all, but its super aggressive. Good for 'core genres, death, thrash

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Lol here's the video if you want to give me your opinion about it. To me they sound close but i prefered the Seymour

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

I'd like to pick up a BW bridge myself, but I'm waiting until people start pulling out those OEM "blackened" versions and selling them used.
Seems silly to me that the stock version isn't the blackened version, seeing it's named blackwinter.

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

The BW got a very special twang tought, you can hear it in most of the video available (Black Winter VS Nazgul, Metal Pickup Demo by Keith Merrow..)

i tried something new on my tube screamer, i tried to put tone at 7-8 instead of 6 like before, now it is better, i have to think about getting a new pickup if it doesn't resolve my problem.

Pretty much what i expected lol. Emg lacks any harmonic character, nazgul sounds pretty messy

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

to me the 707 just sounds like a emg pickup lol pretty heavy but lifeless

the seymour seems more dynamic
