Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Are we still going on about this?

Pull the trigger on that Black Winter already ;)

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

We were talking about how we found the Nazgul against the emg 707 well i can't stand the lifeless tone of most of the emg on the market

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

I still prefer the Pegasus. Thats my last thought, I have the BW set but need another guitar. Pegasus in my #1 and the Alt8 is #1A.

I've found out i am not very fan of the Black Winter Twang :guilty: can you recommend me another pickup ?

The Pegasus just look like a upgraded/less mid scooped Custom 5 to me.

My top 3 are the Distortion, the BW and the Nazgul

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Hmm....I don't think I would ever describe the BW as "twangy". Lol!

Masta' c has you on the right track; he is a member with alot of experience, so I say take a chance. :)

I will throw one more pickup into the equation for you though: if tight, bright and modern are what you are after, you have to consider the Mark Holcomb Omega.

thanks for all of your tips ;) i shall found my holy grail now :)

What i call the Black Winter signature twang can be heard here if you feel curious about it lol

Right at 0:13 , 0:15 this " clang " thing

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

I cannot compare Black Winter to the original SH-6 because I used a Duncan Designed 103 for a while, which is basically the same as SH-6, though. I found that Black Winter is perhaps a wee bit more articulated and has less low end growl than SH-6/Designed 103.

Nazgul has less output and also voiced very differently, I wouldn't recommend it as an 'enhanced' SH-6, although it's a great pickup.

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

the Duncan Designed pickup are just like the Dimarzio IBZ : they're the same, in mass produced factory (from Korea instead of US) they're known to be cheaper and less good.

Yes true for the Dimarzio IBZ.

There is a lot of love for the black winter here but i can't stand the " clang " coming out of him.

Yes, the Dimarzio "IBZ" pickups are USA-made and of the same construction/quality as their standard production DiMarzio counterparts.

The only Korean-made pickups from Ibanez that shared a U.S. company name were the "Duncan/Ibanez" set found in SZ520/SZ720 models a few years ago.

On a side note, I get the impression that you're going to base any decision you make on internet clips alone.

If that's the case, why bother asking for advice here on the forum?

:dunno:

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

i've just checked the old thread about the Nazgul and the Black Winter like this one
https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?310147-Nazgul-or-Black-Winter

Not trusting on the videos but on ol'thread where it is said that the Nazgul got a tighter, more defined notes. At the end of the day i am looking for a more articulated and tighter pickup.

Someone spoke about the Seymour Eq chart too :
5/9/7 for the BW and 5/9/8 for the Nazgul while the Distortion got 5/8/9. On my amp i don't reduce treble or mids, i push them up to 1 o clock, i don't know if the eq chart can be trusted
though

Nazgul is not very well defined. Great for thrash/death/doom/metalcore and not much else.

And the Black Winter is good for Black Metal and other extreme subgenres.

i am more into the progressive/alternative/thrash/goth metal/nu metal
and experimental metal

Is the Black Winter better for that ?

based on what ive heard, yes, though there are probably better options from dimarzio and bare knuckle. Duncans dont do that well for modern metal as far as ive found with what ive tried. Sh-5 custom is alright though, it has a nice low mid grind. Its not as open and clear as my bare knuckles though

I prefer the sh6 Distortion over the sh5 though, the sh6 doesn't have this vintage smell he is more darker, heavier to my ears

i replaced the distortion with a custom, and i have no intentions of going back. Distortion is a bit messy and not terribly grunty for metal. Go with the custom

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Hey guys i post just a little answer here
I finally put a Black Winter in my ESP Eclipse and man this is perfect ! I also tried the nazgul but i prefered the black winter

I also have compared a sh6 Distortion in my ESP Forest GT and the BW in the ESP Eclipse and the sh6 Distortion have a more treble - fuzziest response the black winter also have some huge treble but the BW sound clearer, thicker and more define but he is way more sensitive about the gain setting. The black winter is my new favorite pickup now

Thanks guys

Re: Distortion vs Nazgul VS Black Winter

Which, in your experience, has more output? Black Winter or Distortion?
