DIY Pedal Mod Question

TS-7's, SD-1's. Will it be an improvement if you go through the circuit board with these pedals and replace each component with a high quality component of the same type and value? Is that the biggest diff between the boutiques, higher quality components?

This would provide good practice with soldering, if nothing else.

I'm sure that knowing knowing which component values to change while you are replacing each component is key? And many of these changes can be found online.

Re: DIY Pedal Mod Question

I'm gonna mod my TS-7 too so I'm no experience yet ;)
Maybe in a week or so I can tell you more...

I'll look forward to your report, Marcel. BTW, I know a Marcel in Minden. Where are you if I may ask?

Haha I know some guys from Minden too haha

A great guy named Macel from Minden was an exchange student in our home in 1997. We had lot's a great time with him. I didn't know there were so many Germans with French names. ;)

The girlfriend of good friend comes from Minden... i'll ask them...

Re: DIY Pedal Mod Question

Just changing the components w/t the same value Will not make much if any? Audible difference IMO. Most mods in general, You change the cap value's to revoice the frequencies. Resistor value's to increase or decrease voltage going to other components. And clipping Diodes to LED's or geraniums.
And you MUST know which componets to change.:)

Re: DIY Pedal Mod Question

Filterings, pots, OP-amps, combinations of what and which stuff to use in the clip section, combined with all the rest;)
Other ways of getting overdrive...the posibilities are endless.

Re: DIY Pedal Mod Question

Tweaking the clipping section is the single biggest factor, eh? Can you guy offer any recommendations for the clipping section of a TS-7 or SD-1?

Re: DIY Pedal Mod Question

I found what appears to be a terrific resource on the subject. TS mod to TS808
I hope that this is a reliable source. Now, I'm armed and possibly dangerous...everyone please step back. Sparks may fly.

Not as much as "actually" knowing where and why you're changing something....My answer to you would be no Todd...:)The key for me and any good pedal modder,is to voice the pedal with one's own ears and not just copying someone else! You still need to know what part of the circuit to tweak though and a schematic is great but not always a must once you find so many circuits similar.

Great. You save me from my wrong hypothesis. Thanks John.

I practically mod these pedals for nothing...Why risk screwing the circuit board up when I can do it right and have no problems?

Learning is cool, but you have to prepare to screw up a few pedals in the process....Lord knows I did! :smack:

I used to keep and extra TS9 around in case I screwed the board up or it didn't work upon completion...This isn't an issue today, but about 5 years ago it was...LOL

Re: DIY Pedal Mod Question

I don't have one yet I've heard you say great things about your mods to the SD-1 and the TS-7. While I would love the Sparkle Drive...I'm gonna go the cheaper route. It's worked with the DS-1. I love the DS-1 and especially after the mod...it's a little too hot for me now. I really need a TS-style pedal now...with the modification of course. I'll hit the pawn shops and see if I can find one.

John is your TS mod the same $ as the DS-1 mod?

The TS7 is a bit more....More work....Man save for the Sparkle Drive....It's so much better than any of the Ibanez TS pedals!

Re: DIY Pedal Mod Question

I may be saving and building my GASin'-character by waiting to buy a Sparkle Drive. That's what the master suggests...why shouldn't I listen to him?

But, I gotta get some practice doing pedal mod's. So, why don't all you guys just send me all of your tubescreamers to me so I can practice. If you don't use them you don't need 'em. PM me and I'll get 'em out of your way at no cost to you. :)
