I think this one came out nicely.

Whatever you do, DON'T use a Dremel.

Unless, of course, you're an idiot and you know it.

Re: DIY Scallop

I have always wanted to try one but I press too hard as it is so everything would end up going sharp.

Re: DIY Scallop

I do have better pics of the necks that Ive done over the years but some are not loading for some reason, but here are some that I found... All done with a Dremel and hand sanding...

First is a Warlock neck, which I have more pics of but this is the only one that loaded:

Next is a Strat neck:

Re: DIY Scallop

Clearly, you're an idiot, using that Dremel.

Those look great, and that's exactly the level of scalloping I'm gonna go for. Thanks for posting those.

Re: DIY Scallop

I have tons of pics but they aren't loading. I have some progress pics showing the beginning stages and I have some that show way more detail than these. I think it may be due to the rain and weather so I'll try again and once they load I'll post them.

Re: DIY Scallop

Does anyone know of any good quality videos about DIY scalloping or any textual sources? I want to test my luck on a few cheapo necks I have laying around but it want to make sure I've got all my ducks in a row before I try it.

Re: DIY Scallop

Just curious.

I'm sure this has been asked to death. But in my 31 years of playing guitar, and despite the fact I work on guitars for a living, I have never played a scalloped guitar.

Why do people still want it post Yngwie?

Are you using it to bend notes to sharp? I know that yngwie claimed that it made him faster, but, there are so many people out there who are as fast and accurate or faster who don't have crazy intonation issues from pressing down on the frets too hard when playing.

I'm not knocking it, I'm just asking. I dont claim to know everything.

Re: DIY Scallop

Once you try it and get used to it, the feel of having that string under control is very nice. I got jumbo frets on my last guitar just for this reason but its still not the same feel as a scalloped. Someone mentioned getting bass frets, but I don't think that was an option at Warmoth.

Re: DIY Scallop

I'm assuming you used a dremel contour sander? That is what many users are saying on youtube.

I did it because of John McLaughlin, so that was 20 years *pre-Yngwie*. It isn't about playing faster. It does provide more control over pitch, bends, effort, etc.
