Hi

i have 3 little questions:

1) if you know please tell me if pickups with Alnico 2 for fender p bass '51 exist or not.

2) which magnets are used for antiquity series single coil p bass pickup?

3) Which magnets were used for original p bass 51 in 50s - alnico 2 or alnico 5?

The Antiquity SCPB's use alnico II magnets.

I think the original Fenders used alnico V (I am pretty sure that Fender never used alnico II for anything---I'd have to check with SWD to be sure).

Scott got it before I did. The Antiquities have A2 magnets as Scott said.

thank you very much for help!
guys can you tell me how did you know about it? when i searched i failed to find these details.

The thing is my reissue japanese p bass 51 has very glassy clanky brittle glassy sound.
i wanted to eliminate it with help of alnico II magnets because i want to have oldschool motown sound.

Can you tell me what is the reason of glassy sound (which i dont like)?
my Bass has ash body and maple neck and Original Single-Coil Precision Bass Pickup.

by the way which magnets are used for Original Single-Coil Precision Bass Pickup?

And what is SWD?

is there any source on net where i can read about magnets used for fender
basses and guitars pickups?

Speaking about magnets used for antiquity series, these details are not mentioned here on www.seymourduncan.com...
they dont say about Antiquity SCPB magnets, but they say that
antiquity II SCPB has "slightly stronger Alnico V rod magnets" :
11044-17 • antiquity II™ pickup for single coil p-bass®
Often called the Tele® Bass, this pickup keeps the traditional look
of the ‘50s and ‘60s. The slightly stronger Alnico V rod magnets gives the pickup more presence and output. It’s a little fatter and fuller-sounding than the ‘50s Antiquity pickup.

I would say that you need to turn your tone control down a bit. All basses will sound that way with round wound strings unless you turn the tone control down and find a sweet spot so the clunkiness goes away but you still have note clarity.

Any Duncan would probably be better than the Fender pup in there. If you dig the old sound than the Antiquity is the way to go with some flat wound strings. Or a quarter pounder is good too......but you have to turn the tone control down a bit no matter what.

If you know how to rewire a guitar than you could also mess with with pot and cap values. One little trick is to put the hot wire on the middle lug of the volume pot instead of the end or you can try changing the wire to the tone pot from either directly from the pickup or the output jack. Try 500k pots and a bigger value cap, or less value. It's all about finding a sweet spot with your rig but having enough flexibility tone wise since you only have one pickup.

It makes a big difference using that tone pot. Especially at gigs when you might have trouble dialing in your amp. A little minor tweak of that knob can make a big difference and allows you to add a little extra high-end on the amp for more note definition.

hi thank you for your advice!
actually thats what i do - turn the tone control down when playing.
but this way i have no middle freq. and no presence;
besides the bass doesnt cut through music and through band when playing live.

if somebody tell me which magnets - ALNICO 2 or ALNICO 5 are used for Original fender Single-Coil Precision Bass Pickup (the one installed on my bass) i think i will understand what to do.

That's like asking how much horsepower was in a 70 hemi cuda.

They did use Alnico 5's.

If your bass doesn't cut through live I would think you need a new rig.

What are you using?

i dont have bass amp and at home i play through mixer and speakers,
and as for live stuff - i played my 51 bass through marshall bass amp with a band.

the thing is i have another bass - standard precision with vintage precision seymour d. pickup, which has a lot of mids and do cut through music and it doesnt have glassy sound. So i can compare their sound.

if you say that my fender pickup has alnico 5 and Seymour Duncan Antiquity
has alnico 2 magnets i think i know what to do - i'll buy Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickup and alnico 2 magnets will eliminate glassy clanky sound.
