Do I have the right pickup?

Hi!

I have installed in 2005 a Livewire Metal in my vintage mockingbird. Since I have change my amp and now I own a Peavey 6505+ with Mesa Boogie Recto Cab. At a time, I change my pickup to try the emg 81 but I reinstall my livewire after 2 days (lol). When I change my pickup to EMG, I put 25k volume and when I reinstall the livewire, my sound become less fuzzy and with more punch, so I stay the 25 k pot in it (maybe I will try a 50k but 100k is totally to fuzzy). I also have to setup the livewire far away from the string (like 1/8'') to have a cleaner sound.

The thing is I like the livewire alot for its crunchy punch and its singing tone but is there any others duncan (actve or not) that can be compare to it? Personnaly I try the JB but I don't like it alot (not enought punch, too less bass and mids!).

My type of sound would be something close to Dave Mustaine & Chris Poland on Megadeth 2005 record The System has Failed.

Re: Do I have the right pickup?

the livewire sound a little bit too fuzzy (too much gain and high). I would like to reduce it and stay with the punch and a big mid frequancy response. My preamp setting on the peavey 6505+ are :

low : 1.5
mid : 10
high : 9
pregain : 2
resonnance : 6
presence : 6

I run my guitar with a 6 dB mid booster (yess, I like mid alot!!!!)

I thing Mustaine Active pickup is a good choice! I will try it if I can!

Re: Do I have the right pickup?

Your Treble is 9, Mids 10, presence 6 and lows only 1.5? The pickup is not the reason the highs are too much or the gain sounds fizzy. Turn your treble, presence and mids down a bit and your bass up a bit.

Re: Do I have the right pickup?

ya, having your bass at 1.5 will make the guitar sound like crap, turn down the highs and turn up the bass.

Re: Do I have the right pickup?

yeah, but I can't turn the amp more than 1.5-2 on low because the mesa boogie cab I have had too much low response. And there is also the fact that the passive eq on the peavey 6505 is crap (knobs don't really change the sound that much).

But anyway, the probleme is the livewire has a less cleaner sound on high notes (too many harmonics!) than other pickup like JB for exemple. I would like a pickup that have less output with equal or more punch (if it possible :eyecrazy:) and cleaner on high notes if possible.

For exemple, the EMG 81 is totally more cleaner on notes, but have less punch and the tonal response sound like **** compare to the livewire.

I will see if I can pick a dean mustaine signature or a old ESP mustaine signature too test the livewire Mustaine. Does anybody know about the livewire mustaine? Is they are very differents from the original JB?
