Do looks count as much as sound?

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

I like things that are odd and will catch attention as soon as you step in the room but at the same time It has to look good to me. So basically if it looks weird to everyone else so what but if I like the look im goin for it.

What's going to keep a crowd in a venue isn't what your guitar looks like, but what you do with it. After the first few seconds, the novelty looks wear off and you should be able to play it well, so it doesn't come across as a gimmick. You can pull off weird instruments (and outfits) if you can dazzle them with your playing. Gotta have some substance behind it.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

I think your axe looks good as it is. Bigsby and chrome pickups.

that one isnt mine, its an example of what it might end up looking like. double cream humbuckers might look out of place with the bigsby. I think i will take the chrome top open coiled dimarzios.

i am anxious to see how the humbucker from hell sounds with my guitar's rhythm circuit.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

^ depends if they're plastic or metal.
i think a set of metal rings of that type could definitely open up some options for you.

look at TV jones as well.
and consider going custom shop! for the kind of money it could take to get TV jones or new pickups plus those covers (and you'd better hope they fit over F-spaced dimarzio bobbins) to PR, you may as well just go custom shop.

how attached to that guitar are you? what do your band-mates think of it?

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

Welcome to the Seymour Duncan Forum. What you need is either a C/59 Hybrid/59n or PG set, in nickel covered.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

Form tends to follow function. In most instances you wont have a great sounding guitar that doesnt look good, unless the old girls been around the block a few times, in which case sound flat out trumps looks over some tone dead pretty new guitar.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

Don't forget, you have more options than just the traditional chrome/nickel cover, black, creme, black/creme, double creme, etc.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

interesting, do i have to solder these on?

You can, but you don't have to. And on a Super Distortion, they don't really overhang the bottom of the baseplate, so they are a bit harder to solder than on most humbuckers. I have them just sitting on my Super Distortions, with no solder. They work fine. You can also gaffer tape them to the baseplate. I did that temporarily on my Explorer's 496/500 pikups, while I was still deciding if I like the look and liked the mag swaps I had just done.

I think a good look would be the chrome-bobbin Di'Marzios with the black trim rings, in chrome pickup rings. Make the pole pieces black, and it would look even cooler IMO.

Sound and playability come first. Then looks.

I do like the way my guitars look though.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

Double cream! And yes, looks are very important to me. Of course I'm shallow. So you know... There's that. But really, if I dislike the way a guitar looks it will never be owned by me. Simple as that. There are hundreds of guitars out there. I can find one for my needs AND looks good to me.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

It´s the same as with women in a way, she has to look "acceptable" for me to approach in the first place. But as soon as that is after, it´s all about whether it zings or stings.

And interestingly enough unnecessary bling-bling is a red flag for me with guitars the same as with women, unless it´s obviously a high end specimen

Ehm, let me attempt to clarify: a PRS or supermodel can run around with gold and platinum and diamonds and fur coats and crocodile leather cases and sexy 500 step translucent finishes, but a guitar or woman that´s more "normal" and "average" should not necessarily be spending unnecessary effort or money on superficial things like inlays, flame veneers, botox, boobjobs....

Hmm, that didn´t come out how I really wanted, but I think it´s close enough to understand.... :friday:

*edit* ROFL? I noticed I spelled necessarily wrong, and when correcting I was suddenly stumped at "1 c or 2?"... And then I look at the next sentence and think: "Hey, that looks right" :laugh2:

Albert Brooks had a line in "Defending Your Life" that went: "A woman should be only beautiful enough to turn you on - anything more than that and you're asking for trouble." :)

I kind of feel that way about my guitars. I don't want to worry about keeping them perfect - I want to play them.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

I like to start with a guitar I like visually. Then, when it comes to modifications, unless it's a real eyesore (hot pink pickups on my burst LP type of thing), I don't really care as long as it sounds good.

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

Those chrome topped bobbins with black surrounds would be killer.

Sound is, obviously, paramount (after all, you play a guitar to make music...duh), but looks are definitely important

Re: Do looks count as much as sound?

PS: Glenn, get rid of the dorkey bow tie.....since looks are at least somewhat important. (Your girlfriend told me to say that).
