Do pedals need their own forum?

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

My motive is selfish; I get great advice on pedals and amps here. I think there is a cool synergy of having amp guys and pedal guys in one place. Both groups have dudes who know a lot about electronics, troubleshooting and signal path and whose takes are invaluable to non-tech apes like myself.
I also think there is a lot of overlap between the two and sometimes it's hard to split them out -
for example, where do you put questions on a/b/y boxes, fx loops, cables, adapters, switching solutions, amp/cab modelers (whether software or hardware like 11 rack), preamps/EQs, inline amp FX, etc.? But if you say, "once it leaves the guitar's output jack, it belongs here" that makes it pretty easy to decide where to post.

For what it's worth, I value the advice I get here as much or more than I get anywhere else, and it seems to be free of a lot of the hype/flame wars/trolls/vendor FUD compared to other forums. I guess I weigh in as "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but I am a relative newcomer so I defer to my elders.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

My feeling is less is more when it comes to forums. I think you get the most participation and exchange of information when we exceed a certain critical mass. And the more folks are in a forum at any given time, the more likely we are to achieve that critical mass. Split people between different forums, and you're less likely to get that. That's why we've kept the number of rooms relatively low compared to other forums.

I kind of saw this coming.

I was about to post a question about a pedal and wondered, "wouldn't it be great if we had a room for pedals?"

but this makes sense.

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

Then we're definitely getting a separate sub-forum for Ibanez SoundTank pedals?

I disagree. There may be a few people that don't use pedals that will avoid the pedal subforum, but everyone uses pedals with amps, and would go into both.

(Technically, I use pedals without amps, but I'm weird like that. I also use amps without speakers.)

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

I personally believe that separating the two could lead to killing discussions of BOTH topics.

The pickup lounge kinda pewps on that theory though... Almost noone uses guitars without pickups yet there are many more people in the pickup lounge than the guitar shop. Some of these forums are slow enough as is without pulling more people off them.

I was thinking, "The Dead Zone." But you might have to pay Stephen King.

Amps, pedals, racks and modelling, collectively? Plug-ins!

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

If it gets a try out, it should be called The Pedal Board, of course.

I would personally like it to be seperate as I personally dislike pedals and have little to no interest in them but often I have to wade through a few pages of pedal threads to get to the amp content which is a shame as that's the main reason I visit!

Re: Do pedals need their own forum?

One of the best forums I ever used had a hierarchical format, much like RTL. They would have put "amps" and "pedals" as separate categories under "electronics" or something. So then if you want to read about amps and pedals mixed together, you would browse the "electronics" forum/list, but if you wanted only one or the other, you would read electronics.amps or electronics.pedals. It worked really well.

I'm sure such a change is impossible using vBulletin, though.

I'm pretty sure you can do sub-forums in vBulletin, not so sure about the 'mixed' version though - the parent forum would usually look like a separate entity from what I've seen

I agree with Evan. Let's not turn this place into TGP.

For the love of gawd, let's not ...

I like this idea. I think it should be a sub-forum of the off-topic room, invisible unless you're a forum member and logged in. Let's give it another level of secrecy: There's a box in your user preferences that you check or uncheck to indicate whether you want to see it or not. That way if you're not interested, you can opt out. Guys, we need to get this going. My first thread is going to be Alexandra Breckenridge.

After season 1 of AHS I wholeheartedly endorse this.
