yes, they do...the cover trims back just a little bit of the top end, which makes the bass and the mids (mostly the mids) stand out a bit more.

To me they just muffles the whole sound....makes it all dull.

100% correct. Eric Clapton has commented on how removing the covers of the pickups in his old Les Pauls made for a ballsier tone with more prescence. Lew
