Do some of you make your own pedals?

I've been on here for a while, and keep reading about all of you that mod, and some of you make(?) your own effect pedals? what does this consist of, how hard is it, how expensive, and what quality can you get?

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

No. but if I did i would call my company: Zuzu's Pedals™

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

well i just bought a kit to make my own tubescreamer clone...does that count lol.

Look on Harmony Central's effects page toward the bottom. There are connections to webpages re: making your own effects, how difficult, etc.

Many of the guys who mod are guitar buffs with Bachelor's degrees in EE. You could also send a private message to STRATDELUXER97, aka John Spina, who mods very nicely for people on this forum, including me.

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

ive built a couple of fuzz boxes.....pretty easy stuff, just gotta know how to read schematics and solder well......and you have to learn about some of the parts on a superficial level, nothing too in depth

not very expense either.....i built a fuzz face for under $20.....tho i didnt have to buy a pedal box, got a junk DOD pedal my friend had and gutted it

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

Yeah ! I just built a very cool distortion pedal. There's a lot of sites that
sell ready to go PCB and give a layout and parts list. it's just like Flank
said, You have to have soldering skills,Understand the componets and there
value's (i.e. resistors, capasitors, diodes and transistors) It can be done.
If you can wire up a guitar from scratch? You may be ready to try a
simple fuzz box.

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

talk to MrFJones - he's getting into the pedal designing business it seems
but mumms the word

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

I wish I were Analogman or John or someone who understands electronics and could make/modify pedals. Gosh, that would be so cool.

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

Making pedals is fun, but can be expensive. Parts like cases, pots, and swiches can add up if you want to use high quality stuff. Also, you gotta love the smell of solder and occasionally burning hair and flesh. It happens, especially when you are nearsighted and grab the wrong end of the soldering iron. There are lots of great websites devoted to DIY effect pedal making. Here's a few:

http://geofex.com/
http://www.muzique.com/

Good luck. I've built a few, and if you take the time , you can build something quite usefull, unique and durable. Just don't plan on it being less expensive than buying off-the-rack.

I just mod pedals at this point, simply because I don't have the time nor the ambition to do my own pedal...Maybe when I retire from my current career?

Even the modding is just a part time fun hobby for me..

I'll be the first to tell you that it's basic electronics and not rocket science, but you do need good ears and you also need to know where and what to change in the circuit...

Hello Hello--
Yes, been making fuzzes for years [mostly British stuff and really strange, early American fuzzes....]. Here's some stuff:

Getting original transistors can be a pain but overall I love the process of building them.

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

I get a kick out of it. I started with www.generalguitargadgets.com (their Rangemaster clone). I've done a few simple circuits I've found on the web. My fave has to be www.runoffgroove.com 's Tube Reamer. It's got a unique sound that makes most any amp I've plugged it into sound cool. A lot of people like it better than their Tube Screamers and TS clones! I use it all the time, and mine is ugly as hell (just bare aluminum with two knobs, a footswitch, in and out jacks and a sticker).

It's fun, but for me, a big learning curve, and a lesson in patience. It took me many hours to do the first one, and many hours of debugging after that. But once you do it, it's a total feeling of satisfaction, and you want to do more. The best part is you really see that some great sounds result from such simplicity, not over-complication.

If you don't go to radio shack, it can be done economically. The biggest cost is usually the enclosure.

I've got several on board to build. The easiest is buying the boards pre-made, and you just add the little components and wire them up. A lot of them you can't find in stores, which is kind of cool. The online community is way helpful as well. What's cool is, some of the most highly praised pedals are DIY (like the BSIAB II and Blue Magic pedals), and some of these dudes have built and played through most everything.

I swear I kill almost every thread I post on. Do I have B.O. or something?

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

I have . . . but only on "paper". :laugh2:

I'd love to start a pedal company . . . and call it "The Artie of Noise." :)

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

lol :laugh2:

i can do basic mods, simply because i've collected a load of schematics and i bought the indyguitarist all-in-one pack.. i've started to recognise the odd common feature in some pedals.. DS-1s and SD-1s i can usually work out :)

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

when spina mods them...what exactly does he do? what is the difference in the sound? i mean can he like make a digitech sound like a tubescreamer or a marshall blues pedal?

Re: Do some of you make your own pedals?

just modded stuff so far...
I'm planning on doing a compressor.
I also haven't decided what to do with my tube preamp - shall I put it in a floor unit or in a rack unit.... hm, I'm still not shure..
