Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

lol I was wondering what you and Adam were gonna think when I posted it for sale.

Hey, I've sold off stuff that some people here would straight-up murder people for just because I got bored of looking at it.

That's not boasting - just that I am fickle with guitars - so I wouldn't fault anybody for selling something, no matter how cool it is or how badly they wanted it.

At the end of the day, we ain't gonna run out of cool guitars.

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

Yeah, +1 to what he said.

I mean, I've straight-up murdered people just because I got bored of looking at them, too.

At the end of the day, we ain't gonna run out of cool people to kill.

Also, who cares what we think. We're just random assholes on the internet. Do what makes ya happy, man. :friday:

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

Speak for yourself.

I am also a random asshole IRL.

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

I am very selective in the gear that I own & because of that I have very rarely sold any of it. I sold my Old Hagstrom II because I needed the money to buy my Jaguar. That was in '67. Then I bought a Taylor that I wound up hating but I fought with that guitar for almost 10 years. I sold it & bought my Santa Cruz and never regretted it.

I now have 30 guitars and 6 amps. I love them all.... and I play almost all of them. I have a nylon string & an acoustic archtop that I don't play to often but everything else is played pretty often so I am completely satisfied with what I have now.

I do understand the GAS syndrome. So many of us get caught up in the gear thing. If we put as much effort into practicing & studying we would all be much better players for sure!

That's the key, keep a balance, so your playing skills keep up with your investment in gear. When you don't have much time to play or practice, something needs to drop down on the list of priorities.

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

In my previous band me and the bass player were constantly buying and selling gear, never quite happy with what we had.
The guitar player/bassist in my new band plays a total POS Westfield strat copy and doesn't give a crap about expensive gear and, thankfully, its started to rub off on me.
I still like trying new gear, but I'm past the stage of buying stuff for the sake of it - Im happy with what I have now (although I do want another flying V!)

Ha! One of those was my first ever guitar. Black with a white scratchplate. You're right, total piece of **** but it sounded freakin' badass with a Hot Rails in the bridge.

I rocked that thing live at a few punk gigs and it seriously kicked ass. Have you seen inside it yet? On mine, they'd routed the plywood body too far and there was a massive hole from the control cavity on the front right through to the trem cavity on the back. Completely ridiculous.

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

Hey, if we all didn't succumb to the desire for new stuff all the time, the entire pyramid scheme we call an economy would collapse! It's like granite counter tops. Who the F ever even heard of those things until about 10 years ago, now everyone has to have them. (I hope the granite industry gave their marketing guy one hell of a bonus)

I'm lucky in that I get bad GAS every six months or so, but I'm so indecisive that by the time I might be ready to pull the trigger, it's either passed or the object of my desire has been sold.

Procrastination and indecision have saved me thousands of dollars.

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

In my own defense, I will say that since my means are limited, I did research before I bought any guitars and with pickups, I tried to pick what I thought would best suit the guitar. And what I had left have usually gone into a different one.. Ive tried very few different models in the grand scheme of things.. Ive tried only a small bunch of Dimarzios and other brands too.. So, I havent jumped on the hottest new everythign that comes out

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

And I'm a random asshole from IReLand.

Let's go a-murderin'.

Wouldn't that make you an ARSEhole?

Either way. I'm cool with it.

Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to play out this bizarre cross-continental Boondock Saintsian murder spree with you, the unacceptable possibility of Willem Defoe showing up forces me to decline (for now).

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

I don't feel that I get caught up in outside hype. IE... I don't really care what the flavour of the week guitar/amp/pedal is on any given forum.

On the other hand, I feel that I tend to do my own thing, and that occasionally has me caught up in hype of my own design. For example, there was a period of time where I wanted to build a totally vintage inspired rig... old school amps, PAF/P90 pickups, fuzz, vibe, tape delay, etc. It was quite expensive, but the idea was my own and not something that was planted in my head.

In the end the idea didn't live up to my expectations... although it was extremely cool, it didn't actually jive with the way I wanted to play guitar. I spent a little while being lost as to what I actually wanted, then kind of fell back into what I was using previous to my big idea and have been quite happy since.

+1. We're doing our part to assist the economic recovery!

Hey Kam, if Sosomething's out I'll take his place. Need to restock the freezer anyway . . .

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

I get caught-up in the hype like most, but my budget is limited enough that I can't just go-out and buy everything I want when I think I want it. Luckily, I'm fortunate enough to know people who DO have that budget, so I just live-off their "scraps" and buy gear cheap that they've GAS'd for and barely played. :D

That's true. My "hype" is mostly created by my own ideas of what I think that I absolutely HAVE to have or "need". For instance, the time that I spent at TGP did NOT make me think that I just had to have a $5-40K single channel amp (thank goodness). ;)

Re: Do you ever feel like you get too caught up in all the hype?

Not as much as I used to. Part of it is knowing what works/doesn't work for me and part of it is contentment with what I already have.

That's not stopping me from an imminent AxeFX 2 purchase. I sold off a ****load of gear over the weekend divesting stuff I don't use anymore and the Axe2 will only require a portion of the proceeds. That's definitely an indulgence but if I didn't have the cash on hand, I'd be more than content to keep my Ultra.
