Do you get bored?

Re: Do you get bored?

Yep I get bored or " in a rut". I usually get out of it by ( as already mentioned) learning something new or by working on some classical tunes and the like. Forcing myself into learning a song I hate is also somewhat eye opening as it gains a new appreciation for the songwriter that I may not have had before.

Re: Do you get bored?

I have a baby, wife and demanding job. Every time I actually get a chance to play I say "holy crap I've bought some awesome sounding gear over the years!"

In past years if I've been "bored" with gear, the reason was always one of the following:
-Haven't played frequently enough
-Haven't played loud enough
-Haven't played with others enough
-Haven't listen to enough inspiring music lately

Once in a while I would need to tear everything up and start over with a guitar and amp and slowly add stuff back in.

Re: Do you get bored?

I have a nice new EVH 5150-3 Lbx 15 watt head, sounds killer with the 5 preamp tubes roasting and at lower volumes too,but I can't stop always researching about something else, and I don't know why I do it because I can't spend anymore $$$ on guitar gear now,but a lot of us have said that!! Seems I will always be this way so really I gave up on changing myself and went with the gear!!

Re: Do you get bored?

I get but, i don't have much money so...Either way, i think todays most important challenge is to not care about gear much. And don't care much about virtual gear too. Do demos of songs, complete them, and practice and study. Use gear as a mean to an end, not as an end in itself.

And this ^ Except for the inspiring music, which is a consequence of our boredom, all the others are true. Not only to me too, and to the guy who wrote it, but to practically all people that i see that are "bored".

Not to mention rock and roll, and all it's subsequent genres, are kinda dead in a way. I mean, have you read the License Agreement of Various Social Media sites, and of Good VSTi Drums, for instance?

The first guys and girls reserve themselves the "right to trap you" into giving them access to every bit of personal information inside your cellphones and such...The VSTi Drums companiES (i've read more than one) Privacy Statements reserve themselves the 'right' to store all of your information, do whatever they want with it, including selling it to who knows which third party...

A certain famous software that came with an interface i bought too, actually said "if you live outside EU you might not accept this agreement, since we may sell your information to people that may handle it in criminal ways", lol. Rock is dead, and there aren't many people connected to change it as far as i see.

Re: Do you get bored?

I have enough guitar and tube amp combinations that I never get bored. I keep my pedal board limited to 2 clean boosts, reverb and delay pedals. I have been a tone chaser for years and realize your approach is more than half the battle. Use 50's wiring and master the volume/tone knobs using light, medium, heavy pick attack, alternate picking will never create bordom. NOS tubes, good pickups and speaker cabs help too. Gear will cost you but your dynamic approach just as valuable.

Re: Do you get bored?

I have enough different potential combinations, to where bored is not yet an option. Bored is for the lazy.

Re: Do you get bored?

I would resent that remark, except that I don't have enough initiative to be considered lazy.

Re: Do you get bored?

I'm not lazy, I keep putting it off.

Re: Do you get bored?

I just bought two chord books and one for scales. I will unplug for weeks at a time and play either acoustic or electric unplugged.

I could really use a two chord book. Three chords have just been done to death. And two chord songs are the hardest to play - if you blow one chord you blew half the song.

Like The Fugs or Bo Diddley. One chord is sometimes all you need.

Re: Do you get bored?

If you are bored, it isn't the gears fault. You have good gear. If you have crap or only ok stuff I can see getting frustrated. As long as you have decent gear, it's not the gear. Try something new, hell, take a gypsy jazz lesson or something to kick ya in the pants. Find people to play with. Get back to what inspired you to play in the first place. Playing music is the best hobby you can have. We focus so much on gear but as jol said the instruments used to make the best music ever recorded weren't as good as what you have right now.

Re: Do you get bored?

I find that when I get bored, the best thing is to learn new songs, or take some lessons.

But, I have a ridiculous collection of 60 guitars and 10 amps, so I never get bored with opening a guitar case.

Bill

You really need some more amps to even-out this "problem". lol

this is good advice, pick up a video from some guitar shark and learn some new riffs.
start jaming with different dudes
when I kinda get bored I go test stuff out at a guitar store. i find people who are always interested in whats out there tend to be more interested in their instrument more in the end.

Re: Do you get bored?

I made a decision a few years ago, DONT SELL ANYTHING UNLESS YOUVE GOT MULTIPLE SIMILAR SOUNDING PIECES.

I have 2 decent amps that get me in the ball park if pretty much all I want. I have 3 guitars and oddly, have no real major desire for more.

I'm constantly buying, selling and trading pedals. I'm at the point now where I've got a pretty good cross section of dirt. I'm now refining what I have. If I really like on particular pedal that works well with everything, I sell off or trade the similar pedals I own that are less versatile. If I haven't found "the one" I keep buying until I do and trade the similar pedals for something else later.

As far as getting bored, that's part of the reason I have such a variety of pedals. To change it up when things get stagnant.

Re: Do you get bored?

Often....but I just don't care, just stop playing and get on with life.
One day the guitar is in my hands again, and I just play.
I have a ton of stuff to dig into, plus I am not fanatical about sound and such, sometimes the ears just gets fatigued along with the mind....

I sold almost all of my pedals, kept a few amps.
Tend to focus on music and other stuff instead...as gear is not that interesting as an obsession....it is like running a loop ;)
