It's more a question of EQ cut in this situation. Less mids for rhythm playing (giving some space for the vocals). When it's time for the solo stomp on something that cuts bass and adds mids & treble. Something like a Tubescreamer (with the gain turned down and tone up), an EQ pedal, a half cocked wah or one of those Dunlop units that you can dial in to sound like a half cocked wah (Q-Zone?).
There's always the volume and tone controls on the guitar if you want to keep things simple.
