Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

I have a Hughes and Kettner edition blue 30 watt. Had a 15 and gave it to the kids and bought a 30 for me.

dont have a pic of my personal one but here is a link so you can see what it is.

Also have a Zinky smokey amp. Its a cool little unit and sounds impressive thru a 4x12 believe it or not. The one thing that would make it more useful would be if it had a volume control.

Peavey Transtube Rage, Blazer, or Envoy. Not quite up to par with the Bandits, but they are great cheap simple practice amps.

This is my Fender 10g amp I use in the summer at the trailer. Easy to carry just handy for around the campfires.

Yep....A Roland CUBE 40GX with a FS6 footswitch. Three channels, all with decent sounds available. I also like it for weight (20#s) and portability going to informal jams. Certainly not abandoning my tube amps, but there are times when.....

For home practice and teaching I use the Marshall MG15R. Not really one to record or play live with but being in a residence with neighbours getting pissed off easily with noise the 15watt combo suits me fine. Also takes up less storage space, and easier to transport (if doing home visits). It doesn't sound too bad for what I need it for, playing along to iPod tracks for example. Works fine for me as it is!

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

yea I got a cube 30
just cant keep up with a drummer on its own

sounds great though

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

Not guilty about Solid state practice amps.I have my little Fender-esque sounding Kustom, and my Peavey Rage from the eighties.

I also like some "hybrids" ( I have a 80's Peavey Classic VTX), which in actuality sound more solid state than valve (tube), so yeah, that would be sort of "guilty".

A Fender Mustang III and a G-DEC 3 blues edition.

Love these cheap amps. In the event of nuclear and/or biological attack, they'll weather the storm just fine and allow me to keep playing the ruins.

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

Incorrect. Those two Fender models employ ICs. Excuse the pun but chips will fry a long time before valves and point-to-point eyelet/turret board.

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

Marshall VS100 combo.
3-ch, sep revs(Cln/Dirties).
Pre-FX model.

Plays nice w/pedals & rack stuffs.

:D

That is NOT a practice amp!!!!!!! It's my main stage amp!!!!!!! And there is a tube involved.

Although 25watt mode is killer in the living room….

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

Love my tubes, but there's time when I am home and just like to plug into a solid state cheapie to noodle around on. What's yours?
Mine is...

There is practice amp, then there is WTF? Might as well go straight into a distortion pedal and headphone out!!!!

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

I want a Micro Cube for beside the bed.

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

My first amp, and it's stuck with me for over a decade of playing now. I've brought it out on a few smaller jazz gigs since my ZT Lunchbox broke, and it sounds surprisingly decent for something that came as a part of a starter pack.

I'm absolutely a "Tube Snob" but I love my S.S. Fenders!!! My Stage 1000 is cool, it's sorta the precursor to the 50W Mustang, incorporating several digital effects to what's essentially just a S.S. Blackface?

My favorite S.S. amp & the only one that gets much use these days is my 50W Princeton Chorus!!! It takes pedals better than any of my valve amps, I've had it since I was 15 and I haven't had to put a penny into it since, & best of all it always sounds the same!!! No worries about the humidity or temperature of the environment that you'll be playing in & no warming up tubes or blowing them then having to spend a bunch of money and time to fix the problem? You can just plug in your guitar & play!!! Why exactly do I love tube amps again??? LOL!!!

The two 10in speakers are wired in stereo & the sound I get from them is far superior to the sound I get from the single 1X12 Celestion G100T in the Stage! This amp is also basically just a S.S. Blackface with digital effects, well one digital effect, the Chours? The Chours from this little girl is nothing short of awesome!!! I've owned dozens of different Chours pedals over the years but nothing has ever came close to the onboard Stereo Chours that pours out of the Princeton! I'm not sure why, I guess it probably has something to do with the speakers being wired in stereo but its beautiful!!!

The reverb from the Princeton comes from a true spring tank & is NOT digital, this is a big deal to me, especially with a Fender amp! To me they just don't sound like Fender amplifiers without having a real spring tank? Having the Stereo Chours & my S.S. Dirt foot switchable is also a great feature!!! I normally run a very long pedal chain but I have no problem spending the night jamming with my friends with just this & a guitar....

I've used this for everything! Jamming, playing out, recording, practicing, even as a cabinet for other amplifiers & it still sounds exactly the same as it did the day I bought it!!! There's a lot to be said about S.S. amps and sometimes I just get so wound up in my "tube tone" mindset that I forget that I spent 90% of my musical career using this amp & others like it?

80% of the best songs I've ever written have been written using this, some of the best shows that I've ever played were played through this, & the first time I ever hooked up with a girl that was way out of my league just because I played guitar, I was playing out of this!!! LOL.....

Re: Do you have a cheap solid state guilty pleasure amp?

Behringer GMX series, 30 for instance. Crazy good Marshall tone in low volumes. I don't think I ever had a real amp that did better rawk tones at low volume...Tech-21 TM10 is about as good but not that cheap.

These days, however, no amp beats Amplitube 4 for recording. Doesn't really count as a cheap amp I have like at least $500 in my Amplitube rig...but it eats $5000 amps for breakfast 😀

For live playing w/the band nothing beats tubes though.

Roland Cube 20GX. It's a fun little box and I like the fact that it has an iPod input. It's great for lessons and open mic nights and it'll take acoustic guitars too. I don't feel guilty about it in the slightest!
