Do you have a "stunt rig"?

Empty Pockets

BadHairDayologist
I'm about to start playing with a punk band whose main goal is to have wild & rowdy shows and being very wasted at shows. So when I thought about taking my Orange 4x12, my 69 Bassman and my 87 Les Paul Custom to ****ty bars, I got a little freaked out. So I took to Craigslist and put this together:

Beat up cab with quality speakers... Micro Terror cranked wide open... Two cheap (but not too cheap) humbucker guitars in case I break one. Is it MY TONE? Nah, but it's close, and it will work, and my nice stuff can stay safe at home while I lose my mind and party. It's like insurance, but more fun to buy.

Anybody else use different rigs for different scenarios?

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

Yep, the Vibrolux Reverb and Gretsch Black Falcon stay home. The Super Reverb and Fender Tele go out.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

Life is too short to play a B rig. Last weekend I took my AxeFx to our gig at a college bar.

Yeah but thats an AxeFX... It will be obsolete and worthless in 5, 8 years tops. My **** is timeless and classic....

Just kidding... You took a respectable risk... But I figure part of the fun of being a guitarist is the gear. This gig rig isnt even my B rig. It's probably like Q.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

It'll be a nice stunt if you can get the Micro Terror to match a drum kit. Just swap it for a Tiny Terror, or just bring your Bassman head and a dirt pedal.

Padded covers are cheap and do a good job of protecting amps without adding weight.

I sorta do the opposite approach, although I'm not in a rowdy punk gig either. I make my main rig do everything outside, with Tuki covers. All the rest of the amps are at home, staying mint.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

Dude that Micro thing is LOUD. I guess i'll test it at practice but I assumed it would pull it off if we Mic the cab. Worse comes to worst i'll use that 100w univox head and a pedal.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

When my new amp comes in my 68 Bassman will be my stunt rig.

lol

Then again, with either rig I'll be using a $5K pedalboard... whatever.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

Love it. I feel like I somehow inspired you to ball so hard. You were a wee tyke the first time I espoused the virtues of the Bassman head upon this forum.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

My Cube 60 and a couple of footswitches are all I take to nasty gigs,
Plus my 1 humbucker Squier Strat.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

Diego has always been the coolest guy on this forum.

"Oh you guys stress about tone? Weird."

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

Hahaha. Frankly the Cube's **** without an external cab.
The stock speaker has no high mids whatsoever, so no crunch and the presence's just fizz.

But if I'm playing in some old bar downtown for audiences more drunk than me, who cares man.
Just play and have fun.

Aye lad I was. This amp is so much better than a lot of amps I've played. The Egnater is going to have some SERIOUS game to keep up. If it doesn't... I'll just have to get another Bassman.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

I thought you were going to play punk? You're supposed to steal the equipment for your stunt rig. At least, until your stunt rig gets stolen by some other punk.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

I approve COMPLETELY of the attitude the OP portrays in the post with that gear.

The OP is a consummate professional and entertainer.

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

sweet B rig!
Can't wait to hear your impressions of it after a sortie with the new band

Re: Do you have a "stunt rig"?

I have a crust punk band going on the side. The gigs are in the weirdest of places. I'm definitely not taking my best gear there and have sorted out a stunt rig as well.

I have a beat up mij Jackson and a Jet City 50 watt head and a beater 4*12 with v30s. Combined they cost about half of my #1 guitar or amp. And they sound good, if not 100% what I want but 100% ok for what we're doing.
