Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

I have a jcm800 2204 (50w) and love it. but for no particular reason I've got the GAS for a jcm800 2203 (100w). I have read they are voiced differently and have different bottom end feel. I definitely dont "need" it. But the older jcm's seem to hold value well so I dont think I would lose money if I decided to resell later on.

So how many of you have multiples of almost the same thing?

I have a Studio Jubilee as well as a 2555 from '88. I've had the 2555 since 2001 and I love it, but it's heavy and ungodly loud. I bought the Mini/Studio a couple years ago so that I could have essentially the same tone at more manageable volume. I still bring out the 2555 when I need the volume, but that's not super often these days.

The 2203 and 2204 are almost the same amp. The 2203 has two additional power tubes, different transformers, and slightly different power supply filtering, but they're identical otherwise. I've played several examples of each, and my brother owned a '78 2203 for roughly four years. Honestly as long as you can find a good example it doesn't matter all that much which one you have. The 2203 will be slightly louder and have a bit more low end, but the overall differences are pretty small. I'd be a lot more interested in the new Studio Classic so I could have that tone at either 20W or 5W.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

Owned several Fender Prosonics in different configurations at one point.
Owned 2 Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket combos for a while. One with reverb and one without. Traded the one with Verb for a clean Mesa DC-5 head which is pretty much a higher powered version of the Rocket. I run both with the exact same pedal board with my effects set the same. They are both very early 90's amps sound similar and I use the Rocket for small gigs the DC-5 on a 2/12 cab for bigger jobs and out door gigs.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

I have been known to horde a Marshall or eight

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

I probably would have made more money working at McDonald's that I did as a musician!

Since you seem to be in the know about Mesas, you wouldn't happen to know what the difference between the 5:25 (standard), Express and Express Plus are?

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

I have two A/DA MP-1 preamps. I got the second one by coïncidence, but seeing how these things are not getting more common, and the interest to include them in any of the modern modellers seems to be lacking, I've decided to keep both.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

Guilty here as well: Two JCM800's, 2204 and 2210, both '84.

Loved my 2204 and got an offer to buy a friends 2210 for a stellar price, so I jumped on it. I could probably get close to 3x what I paid for it. However, they do things a bit different and I rotate them out every once in awhile...not to mention if I ever NEED switchable cleans and an FX loop, but still want the 800 goodness, I got it.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

Yup 50 watt Jubilees plus a 2525. I even wrote a preset on the JMD to sound like the 50 watt Jubilee.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

Evh 2x12 combo (brutal tone beast but heavy)
Evh lunchbox 2 amp head and 2x12 cab light and portable-fits in the front seat
Fender Twin 68 reissue -wonderful cleans and split bassman side is great but its heavy
Fender champ x2 1x12 for practice and writeing-built in Fx-portable and light-even on volume 1 the amp sounds like a tube amp. (P.S. above volume 3 or 4 a blues jr would surpass this amp for pure tone goodness but this amp is ment to give you tube tone at low volume.
Mesa triaxis 2nd genertation with 90/90 power amp
Mesa Rocket 44 special 4x10 addition with tremelo......great amp but heavy beast to haul and it was loud....not really a practice amp.....sold it.
Mesa V twin pedal not an amp but definantly a preamp. brutal Recto tone to any amp at the push of the footswitch

other amps I had and sold in the same line
Blues Jr-great amp but you must turn it up to 3 to kick in the tubes and at that point its already loud-not really a great practice amp unless you can practice loud, then it just kicks @ss with the right speaker
various Fender solid state amps with Fx.....sorry they bugged me without real tube tone and yes....I could tell and hear the differance
Fender Front man 25 I know this amp is solid state but for practice its actually a great amp. the cleans at low volume are good and so is the gain. (side note, There is a pic of Eddy VanHalen taken by their tour manager warming up on this amp before his shows so Im not the only guy to do this LOL)
Evh 50 watt head....I loved the rythem channel on this amp. It was glorious but I didnt care much for the high gain channel and went for the 2x12 combo instead which in my opinion is a classic amp and tone monster
Evh lunch box 1 head. it was a good amp but I wanted a clean channel for a practice and jam amp so I got the Evh lunch box 2 head which has a good clean tone with strat single coils and I actually prefer the gain on it too.

I know theres a common theme with EVH but I hate pushing the amp with pedals. With EVH I bring way less pedals which was weird at first but its already ready to play, you dont need anymore gain or distortion pedals like I used with my Marshalls or PRS amp. Nothing wrong with this if its your thing. I just thought for the price I was paying it should sound about right already.

Been there, I had 3 Laney AOR heads, it was a passing phase. I would prefer a few different ones now. I would add a Marshall DSL, then a Fender maybe.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

I used to have two of everything, as a backup for roadworthiness.

Now I have three of every *sound* in high power, low power and direct line configurations. Completely different equipment that sounds about the same, just at different levels.

LabogaBeasts_LaneyIRT212.jpg

Laboga The Beast 30 Plus & The Beast Classic 30.

Same specs but they sound pretty different, thanks mostly to the different OT's..

The 30 Plus is 80's/modern metal, while the Classic 30 is every Black Sabbath tone in a box.. from the 70's to the 2010's

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

I used to have two of those Vox Valvetronix amps with the chrome grilles. One was 15w and I believe the other was 30w.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

For about 10 years I had three 50W Marshalls - JMP 2104, Jubilee 2553, DSL 50.

I kept my favourite (the 2104), sold the DSL (because I just used to set it up to sound like the 2104) and traded the Jubilee for a Tone King Imperial 20th Anni. The Jubilee was a great amp but it wasn't a sound I used any more. I love the Imperial and have never regretted that trade.

I have a Roland Blues Cube Artist (great all-occasions amp!) that's kind of in the same Fendery ballpark as the Imperial - but one's booteek tube and one's SS so that's nothing like the same amp right? :)

See my answer in your PRS amp thread.

Re: Do you have more than 1 of almost the same amp?

I wouldn’t mind a second Princeton Reverb, maybe stereo or wet/dry.

Forum member WahWah famously tours with two Champs.

I do have two Rivera era Super Champs, but I actually only tour with one of them. You can see it here, imposing its physical dominance on a concert stage.

I had the guts of the second one, which was a spare, put into a custom made head, so I can now use it with any 8 ohm speaker cab...turns out the Super Champ loves 12" speakers too!

A Blackstar ID:60 I liked so much bought the ID:100, identical except for the wattage. I bought two Crate Power blocks in the 90s that I still have and always carry one to a gig in case of amp failure. A Mesa failed at a gig once and the 4 pound Power block saved my ass!
