Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

I owned one for awhile.

Why so cheap?

Well, no reverb. No channel switching; you had to physically remove the plug from the front of the amp to go to either channel.

The EQ switches were nice but required a small screwdriver to tweak them.

Mine also tended to chew up preamp tubes now and again.

I think I got mine for close to $100 back in the early to mid-nineties.

Honestly, it wasn't all that great of an amp.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

In many ways it is a juiced up 800 platform. Lotta gain and the EQ switches can do some cool things. It came out following the Butcher. A buddy has had one for a few years, I decided to trade him for it because I think I can tweak it to some nice tone. ( I am getting it this weekend) It is used by Steve Morse with Deep Purple and Kym Thayil of Soundgardedn used them quite a bit too. In some ways it is like a Laney AOR, a juiced up Marshall vibe which was a big deal in the 80s and continues to be with amps like Splawn... I had one many years back, and the desire to mess with the ugly thing has reared its head....

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

I almost bought one. Local shop had it forever for dirt cheap so I plugged n played many times! It sounded pretty good but had that annoying bubbly peavey distortion know in the 80's n such.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

Great amps for the money. Like Kevlar said, basically a beefed up JCM 800. Crappy cleans, awesome dirty tones, Kim Thayil used it for Louder than Love and Badmotorfinger i believe.

THANX GUYS . . .

. . . keep 'em comming !!!

I am not really a clean player, and thus would not miss the Fender cleans, if i were to get one !!!

Oh, and it is BEACAUSE of the SOUNDGARDEN-thing, that i am looking into one !

The 60W models go for $200. - $250.00 . . . WOW !!!

I also heard many folks do not like 'em because of theier looks, but that does NOT bother me for a second !!!

Can these amps get remotely close to an early 5150 tone - at all ?

And what cabs (speakers) do you guys use with them ?

Yes they can get close to a 5150. I actually prefer the VTM, the 5150 has a stiffness that this amp does not have. I owned a 5150 combo for a good while, don't miss it.... I believe the VTM was one of the amps EVH was useing as a starting tonal point for the 5150. Preamp tubes make a HUGE difference in this amp, very much like the Laney AOR. A 12At7 or two mixed can really open the amp up.

this (and the other posts) are credited responses - that is what everyone says over at www.stonerrock.com - I might get one sometime too. You are really just getting a great amp, great deal, great peavey reliability. less street cred is your gain. I would not bother with the vtm120 personally since you wont get the breakup sound as much at lower volumes.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

These amps are really the forerunner of the Ultra series which was the forerunner of the XXX, which in some ways influenced the JSX. I have an Ultra and it's pretty cool. Not my main amp anymore, but still pretty cool. The VTM is like as described, kind of a one trick pony.

Can you help me a bit more here, please !?

I can not find the section were they talk about this amp . . . :(

Also :

. . . does anyone know if this amp will allow me to play and get simmilar tones as JSBX (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) ?

I know they/he uses a lot of fuzz boxes . . . so can this amp take fuzz very well ? 'specially for rythm playing !??

Maybe I'm being a little misinterpreted. It's as somene else described above as being in the vein of a hotrodded JCM, no real channel switching so it's really a rock amp. Does that help? Like I said, I think they're pretty cool.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

I bought one new in the late eighties when they first came out, I think even then they were only about $380 new. To me it seemed like a "poor mans Marshall" At least thats all I could afford at the time! I used it for two or three years as it was, then used it as a poweramp with an ADA Mp-1 (which I still use to this day!) Eventually replaced it with a Mosvalve. Then, get this, when I bought my first house I had no furniture so I set it on end next to my bed with an alarm clock on it! One trick pony my a$$! Anyway, I still have it, If I ever needed a backup it's there.
Now you all make me wanna drag it out, put some high-gain tubes in it and see what it'll do!
Any mods available for this?

It does a good job of getting that warm and fat late 80's adn early 90's Marshall-esque sound.

If you need an amp to do anything other than that then look elsewhere. That's why I sold mine; other than that sound the thing was worthless.

. . . yes, VERY FIRST MOD : remove alarm clock & coffee mug, plug in and play ! :laugh2:

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

OK guys, for $200.00 odd Dollars I AM GETTING ONE - one trick pony or not !!!

I just can't understand why everyone does not have a valve amp, if there is such bargains out there in the real world ! People who just started playing and want to upgrade from their MG50's and say they can not afford a valve amp of 50Watts, and still pull up their noses for a VTM will get NO SYMPATHY from me . . . and will belabled acordingly !

Now i can not wait to get to the US . . .

. . . why is Febr. still sooooo far away ???

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

I think the thing is that for a little more you're likely to get a whole lot more. $200 isn't all that much money, especially for something like an amp. If your budget was doubled then you're looking at something along the lines of having built-in reverb and channel-switching.

Like I said, it's a decent amp, but most of my criticism of it was that it was very limited feature-wise.

:laugh2:

One of the few Peavey amps I'd actually spend money on. I rather liked this amp and almost bought one. Of course I'm the type of guy who doesn't need "versatile". I'm completely happy with a 2203/4 and a couple of stompers.

I ended up buying a Jackson amp instead from somewhere else cos the Peavey dealer was a $hit for brains.
