Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

I think the thing is that for a little more you're likely to get a whole lot more. $200 isn't all that much money, especially for something like an amp. If your budget was doubled then you're looking at something along the lines of having built-in reverb and channel-switching.

Like I said, it's a decent amp, but most of my criticism of it was that it was very limited feature-wise.

Of course if you dont want bells and whistles, then you just got yourself a bargain, enjoy it!

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

I say just worry about the tone and less about the channel switching and gizmos unless you absolutely need the clean. any amp with a great distortion rarely has a good clean worth using imo. pedals can change up the sound some.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

Can you help me a bit more here, please !?

I can not find the section were they talk about this amp . . . :(

Also :

. . . does anyone know if this amp will allow me to play and get simmilar tones as JSBX (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) ?

I know they/he uses a lot of fuzz boxes . . . so can this amp take fuzz very well ? 'specially for rythm playing !??

these dudes know whats up too:

Well, sure. But if you're going to pull the trigger then it's important to realize what you're getting rather than getting all wacky over a one-trick pony of an amp.

Sure....I own plenty of amps that do one thing really well...but I also own plenty of amps. And half the reason I unloded my original VTM was because I needed something that could do more and didn't have the luxury of owning multiple amps!

I like the $200.00 tags of these amps, and this will NOT be my main amp !
(will probably end up as my stand-by unit, hence me liking the price !)

I am looking into a Bassman LTD for my main rig !

And yes, i know they are completly diff. monsters, but still, $200.00 is nothing for a 60W head !

Hell, i might even like the tone of the two in (((STEREO))) :smokin:

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

I got the 120 yesterday, I slapped some good tubes in it. I gotta say it is every bit as good, if not better than my old Laney AOR. I had to tweak the AOR a good deal to get it to sound warm enough.... Back to the VTM, I do not like the gain switches engaged ( AT ALL!!) nor the mid and treble switches, but with the two bass switches engaged, it sounds fantastic. I have the master dimed and the pre on 5, throught a Weber Mass Attenuator, it is great. Gotta say it is a steal at 200.00 and is better than I remember. Much better sounding than my 5150, which has a nasal quality to it. This is much warmer. The pre tubes make a HUGE difference.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

i had one of those. easy to mod out, and worth the effort. let me know.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

Looks like somthing I might wanna look into as well, I kinda miss my old 2203. For around 200 bucks that aint bad at all. Anybody ever tried one with a boost in front? I remember my old jcm800 sounded awesome with a modded DS-1 in front.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

It screams with the Duncan Booster. It retainds a clarity, which means you can drive the hell out of it. A much better amp than I previously gave it credit for. I have been playing it a bunch and it might be among the best deals, if not thee best deal you can get on, a rock amp, right now. It can roll from 70s hard to 80s grind efforlessly.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

Kevlar between the VTM, the AOR and the JCM, which one would you recommend the most?
Did you get to play the Sovtek Mig or a Red Bear? They are also in the lines of a hotrodded jcm800.

Man, i can't wait to get to the US, and get one for me too . . .

I have owned both an AOR and an 800, and a 900. As well as a Butcher. 5150 and Ultra. The AOR is set up 80s bright, I had to do a lot to warm it up. Sounded great following that. We know the rep of a good 800. Really nice sounding amps, a staple of many current and classic bands. They are no longer cheap. But in the long run will always hold their value, just the way it is with Marshall. The VTM, for the bucks IMO is the best value by far, IF, you can be at peace with the PV name on the front. With good tubes, I have a variety of vintage pres in there. The clarity, extreme tonal variety because of the mod switches, and all out roar of the amp have far exceeded my expectations of what I thought it was. I run it through an attenuator, which lets me get the full vibe of the amp. For 200.00 it is well worth the hassle of picking one up. I am getting tone that is as good as my 800 and better than my stock AOR, w/o changing a thing but tubes. I don't like the gain boost switches on the VTM, but the bass and mid boosts work very well.

I have played a Sovtek, I would own one for sure if they were still 200.00. For the 400.00 or so, I have no desire to seek it out.

I still prefer the sound of my non master volume heads. They open up in a different way. I am however going to lower the filtering on the VTM, to get a bit more of that character. For a late 70s- mid 80s hard rock voice, I honestly cannot think of a better deal out there. I am a full convert on this head.. I will try and get some clips up.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

Thanks Kev. Would you say it needs to be cranked to 6 like the JCM and the AOR to sound good? I really like the 800's balls for 80's metal, but you can't get'em till you crank it really loud.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

they have super small transformers. replacement of the output would go a LONG way to making them sound even better. i liked mine, though, when i had it. heavy beast.

The Iron in mine is as big as the hammonds in my Traynors. I am actually suprised at the size. Only my Stramp head has larger xformers.

Yeah definately.
In general I am not a fan of master volume and this one is no exception. I run the master dimed and the pre on 5.

Re: Do you know the Peavey VTM series ?

thanks for the review; it is just confirming in my mind how awesome vtm60 is; I might get one when I get around to it
