Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

YES!
I reckon they make some plain colours really shine. Although not always appropriate, when used right, it totally kicks ass!
One of the more iconic "tortoiseshell" guitars that i've always loved the look of is SRV's Scotch.

Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

When used right, they can be alright I guess. But I would say no, I think in 95% of cases they look dreadful. Kill the guitar.

Pearl, on the other hand, is perfect for most guitars.

It's all about context.

Generally I think pearl looks kinda cheesy.

Torts kinda kool.

Love my torted out ash-body rides!

^One of the few applications I like.^ Balances perfectly with the natural grain, and the white accoutrements (knobs, pups), plus the chrome. The 4 ply (is it 4?) is a great touch as well.

Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

I have a 57 RI Strat that has beem heavily modded. It has a Warmoth RW FB birdseye neck, a set of graphite saddles and nut, Sperzel locing tuners, a set of Duncan Texas hots and a Tortoise guard on a vintage whit body. It looks, sounds and plays really good!

Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

YES!

Love the tortoise on my natural ash G&L strat. And the red tortoise on my white strat. Used to have a red strat with tortoise pickguard and white pickups. That looked great as well. And would love to have a black strat with tortoise pickguard also. So yeah, I like the looks of tortoise.

Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

I've got a '95 American Std Strat in vintage white that I've been thinking about putting a tortise shell on. It would look awesome I think. SRV had one like that.

Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

Yes, although I admit having a white guard on my Tele right now. I didn't really like the Nashville's original tortoise shell-on-candy apple red scheme, so I switched to white when I added the neck mni-hum.

But I think tortoise looks great on a lot of different body colors, including Dakota red, so go figure.

Golden Boy, that Special is SOooooo cool.

Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

I like mine! See through blonde and tort... didn't think I'd like it myself but I wanted something different.

What pickup is that in the bridge position of your Legacy? Hot rails? I have a Legacy and have been thinking about cutting-up the pickguard to throw a JB or Tone Zone in there, but I'm just not sure. I'd rather put a stacked single in there so as to not have to cut up the pickguard. I need mine to be setup to split the coils. Is yours? What do you think of the sound and sustain of yours the way you have it?

Re: Do you like tortoise shell pickguards?

I love Tort guards. I bought one for my Tele, but after going back and forth, I've decided to use NO pickguard on it. It will stay like this, and I'm leaving the screws in too. \m/

Yeah it;s a hot rails, I quite like it as it can scream and doesn't sound thin. It isn't split though I will get it done at some point just no rush. It's a great versatile set up... if I wanna take just 1 guitar out this is it. The G&L singles (don't know exactly what they are) are superb too, compared to alot of singles I've heard these are cool... vintage sounding?? I can't say how the hot rails compares to others though 'coz I got it like this and like it as it is. This pick up has harmonics by the shed load, I wouldn't butcher your plate bud... either get another plate pre cut or try the hotrails or lil59 or the like. All the best.

Kewl. Thanks. Will most-likely just do that. Wonder what the split-coil sounds from the Hot Rails are like...
