do you name your gear

Re: do you name your gear

I do not, no. Even when I have something I think deserves a name, I dub it...something...and promptly forget.

Re: do you name your gear

I decided to name my SG Mary, out of the late Mary Ford who was Les Paul's wife. She played a white SG Custom and my SG is white with a black pickguard, so I figured "Mary" would be a good name for it. My Squier Cali Series strat on the other hand, is named Alvin, because he won't stay in tune most of the time! And the blue Ibanez is named Simon, as he's the responsible one out of the bunch, staying in tune for me and playing perfectly. The black Ibanez RG is named Charlene, in sort of an honour to Alvin's ex-flame. The black Samick I thought I'd name Dusty because I found it in a recycling center, and it had a lot of dust on it, and rusty strings when I found it. That guitar sounds a killer for slide. The black RG is in a pawn shop unfortunately because my mother hocked it!

Quick guitar history lesson needed.

The first incarnation of the Gibson SG came labelled as the "Les Paul Model". Les hated the skinny/pointy, revised shape. He requested that Gibson cease applying his name to it. (He also wanted to deny Mary Ford a cut of any royalties paid to him by Gibson.)

Les and Mary appeared in promotional circumstances with SG/LP electric guitars for strictly commercial reasons.

If you want to name a white "SG" after a lady, I respectfully suggest Rosetta, after Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

Right. I'll change it then. Though I thought of Mary Ford as soon as I got that guitar.

I have a Fender Strat called "Roxy".

She was a slut in a red dress when I bought her from a pimp in London almost thirty years ago.

Now, after a paint-job and some other mods, she's grown into a high-class hooker, and I love her.

LOL.

I don't name things. It doesn't make them better than they already are. Had a friend that named everything. His car, his boat, wrenches, brooms, guns, instruments, etc. I don't think he named the refrigerator but probably only because he didn't think of it.
