Hi guys does anyone know the reason why people remove the back plate of their strats showing the insdie of the tremolo? I know stevie ray does this and a few others why though? I just removed mines right now to see whats inside, can i eave it liek this or should i put the back plate back on my strat? I noticed there is a wired soldered down should i put the back plate on to be safe? I find it looks alot cooler like this am i the only one?

well, that wire is a ground, its ok if you touch it while its on, i guess it's be off to adjust the trem floating height easier...

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

ditch the backplate, they create a resonance thats annoying at louder volume levels

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

keep the plate off to replace strings faster. very useful when you pop a string in the middle of a song at a gig

That's probably the main reason SRV always had his off.

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

cool, one question though? I noticed SRV had 6 springs at the back of his axe, while mines only has 3. Also is there any danger of a spring or the gorund hooking onto anythign and breaking off? Or will there we tuning problems staying intune with the tremolo being so open?

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

Strat Master, the ground is soldered down, so there really shouldn't be any real cause for concern about breaking it off. And, having the backplate off shouldn't affect the tuning at all. ( unless someone gets in there and messes with the tension on your springs ). :)

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

when you mean messing with the tension how would that happen? as in the removal of a spring?

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

Yes, or the tightening or loosening of the springs. If someone wanted to be a wise guy, they could mess with it, to throw ya off. Chances are, no one will mess with it. But , if you're at a gig, keep an eye on it, to make sure no one messes with it. :)

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

cool...umm but how do you loosen the springs or tighten them? there are no screws or antyhing...how do you do this??

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

the claw that the springs are attached to have two screw in it, srew 'em in or loosen 'em out. I play w/ all 5 springs and the claw screwed in, but depending on playing style and string guage, it varies.

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

If you look inside the back cavity ( spring cavity ), there should be 2 screws, which tighten or loosen the springs, depending on which way you turn them. The springs will either raise or lower the back of the bridge ( through spring tension ), thus affecting the action and tuning of the guitar. Once you have the Strat set up to your liking, and it is intonated properly, I would advise against messing with the springs, as it will through off your set -up. Set the springs where you want them during set-up of the guitar, that way you won't need to adjust them . Fender advises to have about 1/8 inch clearance between the bottom of the bridge and the guitar body. I always tighten my bridge down flush with the body. It's really just a matter of where it feels comfortable to YOU !!! :)

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

So in order to loosen the springs you would have to remove the part where the spring is latched onto the guitar and then unscrew the claw that is goinginto the tremolo? isnt that kidna of hard to do?

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

All ya have to do to loosen the springs is grab a screwdriver and start turning the screws. You'll see that one direction tightens them, and the other loosens them. :)

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

Wait, do you mean those two screws that is connected to the plate of metal that is holding the spring to? tighten or losen that to increase or decrease tension?

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

for instance, on my MIM strat, i like to keep the bridge flush with the body. but when i adjust it that way, the STRING holes don't line up with the gap on the plate. so it becomes difficult to replace and change strings. and it looks cooler that way, too. but don't let anyone near it, they could mess something up.

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

BUt for some one to mess it up wouldn't they need a screw driver? isnt that kidna of obvious what they are upto? And it snot exactly a fast job they need to unscrew it and all.

Re: Do You Remove the Back Plate of a Strat?

Usually, if anyone is gonna mess with it, it will be a friend, who just wants to mess with ya. Leave the backplate off, you'll be fine !!!! :)
