do YOU use a wah pedal?

I've only recently started using one, and it's the basic Dunlop Crybaby. It's an effect that takes some time to get used to using so that it doesn't sound like crap, though. I like it, and don't use it too much (I don't want to overuse it!), but I now want to try out other wahs to see if there's one that I like more than the basic Crybaby.

I like the tone from the Crybaby, but I don't like a couple of things:
1. Having to "stomp" it on and off. That's a little annoying, especialy when you're in the middle of a solo, or riff.
2. I don't like how the pedal travels down with little affect on the tone, then there's about a half inch where all the "shaping" of the tone occurs, then more travel with very little affect again. I have to really "finesse" that middle section.

Any suggestions to overcome these 2 things??

If it's a Cry Baby, you'll always have to stomp it to turn it on, unless you want to replace the switching system. Not sure how you'd do that.

The sweep and/or range can be adjusted tho. Remove the back, & you can press on the rack until it lets loose of the gear on the pot (you may have to loosen the nut on the pot). Then you can slide it up or down on the pot until you find the sweet spot.

the bad horsie and bad horsie 2 are both auto-wahs like the tremonti
The BH, BH2 and Tremonti are 'switchless' wahs. An auto-wah is a different device.

This is good stuff! I'll fiddle with it, and see if I can figure out what you're saying. Perhaps a Googls search will give me more info too.

Yes, I know the way the Crybaby switches on & off is just the way it is, but if I can find a different pedal that has an easier way to switch on & off, that'd be great. If it had better sweep/range, then that'd be a bonus! I'd like to kill 2 birds w/ one stone, if you take my meaning.

Re: do YOU use a wah pedal?

I have a Hendrix Crybaby that gets a bit of use. It's great for leads, and sometimes I use it as a tone control - just leave it in one spot. That's how Mark Knopfler got the "Money For Nothing" tone.

Re: do YOU use a wah pedal?

I own an early 90s Morley wah, but I never ever touch it, since so little of my playing these days takes place away from my PC. I do, however, sometimes find use for the modelled wahs in both my V-amp and Toneport, though I tend to set them to a particular postition in front of a (again, modelled) fuzz pedal rather than manipulating them while playing. When using models of the Fuzz Face or Big Muff, I almost can't use them WITHOUT a wah in front to open up the sound.

Re: do YOU use a wah pedal?

I did use a wah pedal before it got jacked, but I will have another one and yes I will use it!! Probably gonna go with a Teese RMC1 this time though :)

Re: do YOU use a wah pedal?

I have a Teese Wizard Wah. I don't use it much actually. I don't really like the way it sounds with my Marshall, but it sounds good on my boogie combo. I'm going to hold onto it for awhile though. I also have a Bad Horsie I which I haven't even touched in a couple years. I really have to get rid of that thing.

Check out this site: http://www.stinkfoot.se/andreas/diy/mods/dunlop.htm#_modding_the_wah

There's all sorts of mods there, including how to mod it for true bypass so you won't lose tone when it's off. I haven't done any of them yet, but plan to start soon. I haven't been using mine much lately. I'll hook it up for a little bit and play around with it, but then disconnect it because of the massive tone loss, so I definitly plan to mod it for true bypass so I can just leave it in the chain.

I had forgotten about that website, it's a good one.

I've had lots of old Crybabys, mostly the one made by Thomas Organs, & replacing the switch with a DPDT is the BEST thing for them. I don't know if the Dunlops need this mod or not. The first time I tried my Wah with the new switch I was amazed at how much better it sounded.. Whenever I get an old FX box, that's the first thing I change if I want to use the pedal in front of people.

Re: do YOU use a wah pedal?

Use a Ibanez WD-7. Get the job done but sounds a little gritty when engauged with distortion, still tweakin' the knobs.
