Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

If I've been eating anything with my hands: Pizza rolls, popcorn, chex mix, etc, then I definitely wash my hands before picking up the guitar.

I keep the hands pretty clean so I don't always have to before I play. But in the winter and my hands are kind of cold a nice wash in hot water helps limber them up so as to get ready for some serious pickin'.

That must mean you don't wash your hands after you go to the bathroom,
unless you only go to the bathroom three times a day, but that means you must have one hardcore bladder.:onder:

Nope I don't generally wash my hands when I go to the bathroom. I tend to keep my **** pretty clean, so I don't really think its nessicarry. haha. I do go to the bathroom fairly often though. I have a tiny little bladder (its true my doctor said so!), and I drink tons of liquids so I piss probably 20 times a day. But being as I have been pissing since I was born, I've gotten pretty good at it. So good infact that I NEVER piss on my hands. So I feel no need to wash them. If you feel the need to wash your hands after touching your own ****, Maybe you should clean your **** more often, or stop pissing on your hands.

Now If I go Poo, then Yes I wash my hands. But I don't tend to Poo more than twice a day, and generally Only once a day.

...I'd rather wash my hands BEFORE going to the bathroom than after.

I mean, which is more important? I say keeping the **** on my hands off my **** takes priority.

Inadvertantly smearing smeg on people, I have no problem with.

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

Sometimes I wash them, other times not. When I was youger, I know for a fact that my hands were more oily/moist. As we age things get drier, like the eyes. I notice less dirt underneath my strings when I clean them.

Also, the air in the desert is DRY. I once let a razor blade sit on concrete outside for six months underneath a non-running car. The only thing protecting the blade was a layer of motor oil, as it was used to scrape a pan gasket. The top side was free of rust, and the bottom side had only minor surface pitting than could be rubbed off by hand!

I wash my hands probably a dozen or more times per day...and nearly EVERY time before playing guitar.

But I cannot use the new "foam" soaps. They make my hand stick to the neck. Me no likey.

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

I wash my hands under hot water (not quite hot enough to burn, but still hot) for 1-2 minutes before sitting down to play... always did this before gigs, too.

Run some Fast Fret over the strings, wash hands, wipe strings down, play.

I find the hot water gets the blood flowing in my hands, let's them loosen up, and makes warming up much quicker!

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

I don't really see how Finger grease is gonna "kill" strings. I mean I dunno about you, But My finger tips don't really sweat, haha. I have never wash my hands before playing guitar, don't really even wash my hands that often (three times a day Max, not counting when they get cleaned in the shower everyday).

I'm with you on this; I wash my hands probably a bit more than the average person but I've never thought of it as something to do specifically before playing.

Although, using hot water to get your hands warmed up sounds like a pretty good idea. I'm usually standing there for 5 minutes flexing my fingers and drawing weird looks for it.

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

I always wash with warm soap and water...

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

I never wash just because I'm picking up a guitar. My hands are generally pretty clean and I don't have acidic sweat.

Finally, I don't like playing with damp fingers.

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

I always wash my hands before practicing or gigging. It seems to let me get longer life out of my strings.

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

I pick my nose while playing.

It's true.

A 'lil grease never hurt nothin'.

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

Half my neighbors haul water, take showers every couple months I think. I'm spoiled with a good well. I have a couple old accoustics I loan out; always come back filthy and outta whack, but at least they got played.

Indians are much more musically inclined than white people and they all think they are great guitarists. Actually, the drunker the better they are too. They can even play guitar and dance at same time. But cool to see people that take it light and not as judgemental and greedy as us white people, ha ha. My old beaters come back in rough shape when they borrow them.

Nobody touches my strats, wash my hands before playing, and you should see how much I clean neck & body when I change strings.

There are a few guys in my town that have old strats and I swear they have a layer of dust & dirt all over them. I won't even touch their guitars.

Re: Do you wash your hands before you handle your guitars or are you more carefree?

Well, no offense, but this thread is a little Monk-ish. lol.

i dont wash my hands before playing... unless they're covered in mud.

anything too dirty, obviously i wont pick up my axe... but can you imagine Kirk Hammett washing his hands before he grabs his ESP?

or dime washing his hands before going into the mosh pit?

i cant.

Im Sure Duane Allman never went... maybe i should wash my' hand'...

Common man, its Rock n Roll.

I always do. I'm all for 'rock and roll', but it seems a bit childish to cite that is a reason if all you're doing is jamming in your bedroom. If you have naturally sweaty hands, it's practical wash your hands.

I've seen grimy fretboards and it's disgusting so I always go out of my way to make sure my hands are perfect before handling my guitars.

I wash my hands before I plug my amp and open it to see what's inside. I also take my shoes off to show some respect.

Do what with my what, now? :laugh2: :chairfall

Depends on which guitar it is and how dirty my hands got that day at work. I've got 2 guitars I use when my hands get really grimy and I can't get them clean enough for my vintage stuff.
