Re: Does 2 vol 2 tone wiring suck tone?
ANYTHING between the end of the coil(s) in your pickup and the jack socket affects tone.
The greater the number of components in the signal path, the higher the possibility of signal loss.
The lower the quality of the components in the signal path, the higher the probability of signal loss.
The 2V2T control layout associated with Gibson guitars dates back to the 1940s and 1950s. In those days, even having two pickups was a novelty. The idea was to use the four pots to preset two contrasting tones. The player could then flip between these using the selector switch. (Hence, the Rhythm/Treble labels on the switch surround.)
As has been pointed out, there have been triple humbucker guitars with the two volume, two tone control layout. Unfortunately, this is potentially confusing because there are several ways of connecting the pickups, pots and selector switch up.
To make matters even more confusing, Epiphone produced a three HB version of the SG Custom featuring three volume pots and a Master Tone.
Steve Howe of Yes has a modified Gibson Les Paul with four humbuckers, four individual pickup volume pots. The standard three-way selector switch is redundant so the master tone pot takes its place on the upper bout. Dangerously close to Spinal Tap!
Three humbuckers, 2V2T three toggle switches = Pete Townshend's modified LP Deluxes.
Can't think of anything HSH with 2V2T.
