please raise Your hand if You've been paid at least $1000. for Your part at a gig ( playing guitar ) for 1 Set with a bridge Only pickup Ax ( but had other Axs there too ) and NOT in the 80's . plz feel free to save + use the jpg

my hand is up

Using a general music audience's opinion or what a promoter will pay as a barometer for the quality of tone or functional need of a neck pickup is silly.

-OP is asking guitarists and luthiers for an educated opinion -thus the point of a guitar forum.

Absolutely correct! The general public only knows whether it likes the music or doesn't. Most don't even care about how it's done or the details. Some of the girls I dated only insisted on one thing - A FUN SHOW. Chops and tone didn't impact the decision for them. For some - danceability didn't even matter.

One of the guys I played with for years used a Steinberger. His girlfriend listened to the audience, and they all wondered WTH he was playing? Banjo, uke? She said put that thing away and play a guitar so they know what you are. All of a sudden - they all liked the music a lot better because it looked familiar.

I was never a chops guy when I was playing, I played in the pocket and made sure everyone was smiling. The crowd should be rubbing bellies and drinking adult beverages. DO NOT KID YOURSELVES! In the bars and clubs - you are not artistes, you are beer salesmen. I played as much as I wanted then because I saw what paid, and what didn't. As a side note - never play high or drunk. You are WORKING.

I have only ever "liked" 1 neck pup ever. The 59 in my Dean V.

But.... I could honestly never use a neck pickup again, I have zero use for it.

That's just me. I fully understand that I am different than everyone else. I get that a lot.

See, I feel the same about the bridge pickup. Diversity rules!

Sometimes I only need a neck pickup, but I put it in the bridge.

none of that has anything to do with MY response to your comment, your response is classic strawman internet diversion back to an earlier post where you may have actually had a point or been on topic.

My point is bragging about commercial success using an audience or promoter as the barometer is not of value for a qualitative discussion on neck pickups. -If you would like to respond to that comment fine, and unnecessarily aggressively or brashly fine, but that's your style not mine, I'm just making a point with no added emotion. Audiences and making a certain amount of money is irrelevant.

-and I wasn't disagreeing with your prior statements which you divert the subject to in your response -only what I quoted.

**also no comment in blue snuck into my comments either***

Depends on the venue & who's on stage. While at most gigs you're background music, in others sometimes part of the crowd watches the band and applauds after solos. Even a majority of the crowd. I've been to places like that, and been on the receiving end of the applause after solos. If you're at a venue that primarily hires bands that play top 40 hits and popular dance numbers, people usually don't pay attention to the band. It's all generic music, they don't care who plays it. But some venues have blues bands or certain genres of rock, that can bring out people who are into those kinds of music. Especially if the band's really into their playing and the guys have some chops. A lot of people like seeing a musician who's really good at what he does. Some places you do more than just sell beer.
