Does it bother you...

Re: Does it bother you...

If you're any good at playing, people should be paying attention to you, not the fact that your amp head is an inch and a half wider than your speaker box.

I didn't ask if it bothered the crowd, I asked if it bothered the player. I don't care what the audience thinks - if I did I'd be playing pop music.

Re: Does it bother you...

My Marshall DSL-100H is a little wider than my Laney cab, never really thought about it, sound is more important to me than nice architecture......

Re: Does it bother you...

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at there, Crusty. Last time I checked, musicians made music for themselves and disregard what other people think.

Ah, right. That would be unemployed 'musicians', sitting alone in their bedrooms i suppose. I concede that under those circumstances, having an amp head that's marginally wider than a speaker cabinet might be a red hot issue. Ya gotta be lookin' good there for the posters on the wall I guess.

Conversely, someone who actually takes their gear out and plays music in an attempt to entertain people in some way is probably more concerned about other minor details, like ... err, I dunno ... sounding good and playing well, and in context. You know, minor insignificant details like that.

I get to play out regularly to ordinary, regular folk. I go to jams with other players in various settings, public and private. Players and listeners often come up to me and make comments ... about my sounds, playing and the effect it has on them. Their comments are always positive and enthusiastic (although i could also accept negativity in such comments, I'm not so stupid as to think that everybody loves me or what i do). But the point is that what my gear looks like (or what i look like like, for that matter) to me is totally insignificant, and it is never mentioned by people who make comments to me. Never.

Of course there's room for people to be concerned about what their gear looks like, or how they look when they're playing.

But that has absolutely nothing to do with learning to play, playing at an intermediate or high level, entertaining, slotting oneself into a musical situation, trying to connect with others via music, getting good sounds or anything else to do with music. It's simply a pointless vanity.

But that's only my worthless opinion. At such time as the physical dimensions of my equipment becomes an issue for either myself or the listeners, I might need to review the situation. I guess in the meantime i'll just have to struggle along, apologising to the listeners ... "Thank you for the compliment, I'm glad you found something in there to enjoy this evening. I think i would have played better, and you would have enjoyed things much more, if i'd made my amp head just an inch narrower."

Re: Does it bother you...

It bothers the **** out of me, not so much at home, but at rehearsals and gigs yes. On those occasions when I know I'll be using a head that's wider than my 2x12 I bring an combo amp stand and put my head on it next to the cabinet. Also because the rest of my amps besides my mesa are different colors than my cab and that bothers me too.

Re: Does it bother you...

It annoys me too. Mostly because of the artsy hipster types around here that try to assemble the ****tiest looking (and sounding, but mostly looking) rigs possible. There's a dude that runs a stack with some goofy tiny 4x12 under a 1960 with a PA head on it... ugh.

I wouldn't give a **** if it were for a reason, but it's not. It sounds like **** and looks like ****, on purpose. That's not punk, it's stupid. It's just as bad as someone using a $8K rig playing Blink 182 songs and calling themselves punk.

Thanks.

Re: Does it bother you...

This would drive me crazy. Not just the head being bigger than the rack but mixing the black and white would make me nuts. I would most likely have the rack on a combo stand next to the amp.

Yes it does bother me. It is just one very small detail among many in life that I am OCD about. I really don't know, though, whether it looks ugly to me or looks unstable, but it is a look I don't like.

There is nothing that bothers me worse than a snake fest of cables all over the stage floor. I can't play under those conditions.

Re: Does it bother you...

Yeah it definitely bugs me. Heck, it even used to bother me when the head was SMALLER than the cab, a-la Mesa/Boogie, but I've come to accept that.

Re: Does it bother you...

No can do. Head must be same width as, or narrower than, the cabinet. Everybody knows that. (Twitches head.)
