Does John Spina still do mods?

Snottyboy

New member
Hey folks,

I recently picked up a Spina-modded TS-9DX from a forum member (Thanks, Sly_D) and am really impressed with it. I have A-B'd it with other TS9s (both stock and other mods), and rank it at the top for my tastes.

Which leads me to my question...Does Mr. Spina still do pedal modifications? I'm certainly interested in other things he might do.

Thanks in advance, and I would also like to hear other members' experiences with his mods.

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

he's been diggin his motorcycle and put down the solderin pencil for the time being

search on his name for the last psosts he's made - he explains it all

joelap, a cool younggun forum bro, has picked up the torch of mods and is getting rave reviews from bros who've dealt with him

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

John's mods are great because he did not try to copy other mods, but used upgraded components and his ears to tune the circuits.

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

Hey Snottyboy, I've got two pedals from Joelap on the way, I'll post soundclips and a full review when I get them, but just from our conversations, he's definitely got some great ideas, and the cool tools to implement those ideas.

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

I have a TS9 that John modded for mae and an old Crybaby Way pedal he did for me also. I use the TS9 all the time and I use the Wah mainly at home, but it is the best sounding Wah I have. I would Email him and ask if he is still doing them. I think he will.

+1 he did my ts9 and vox wah -- of all my various effects and stomp boxes, those have become the ones i use the most -- in fact, my basic set-up now is the wah into the ts9 - i don't use the wah for wah-ing, but for changes in tone -- i'm leaving them to my son in my will........

Mr. Spina....that kills me.

John did my Boss SD-1, and it sounds great. He also did a repair on my old old Boss Chorus, CE-1 I think. New LED and fixed the switch, opened up the tone...something, it sounds great.

I think he will still do stuff on a case by case basis, I think he just got overloaded for a while. He's a bit of a perfectionist, and I think a bit complusive...but in a good way. Shoot him a PM or an e-mail.

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

John did my '79 MXR distortion + and the thing rocks now, much more of a full sound no more buzzzzzzzz. i was just playing it through my marshall and it adds a much needed kick in the nuts to the amp! he does some great work IMO and i hope he'll still take on work from people now and again so others can hear his talent!

Just being "respectful".:) I feel it's deserved...everybody else's posts echo similar to mine. John's obviously got passion for his mods. There's a post in the archives somewhere in which John almost begs another forum member to let him mod his TS-9DX before unloading it due to frustration. I'm sure he wasn't wanting to do it for the money...and that speaks volumes to me.

Thanks for your input folks. I'm happy with my Spina pedal. Wouldn't mind one or two more!

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

I should have put a smiley next to my post. John's been around here so long he just seems like John to me. I wasn't trying to be disrespecful in any way. It's kind of like calling Jolly "Mr. Jolly" !!!!!

None taken too seriously Jeff_H...or shall I call you "Sir"?

Going back through the old posts, I realized John's been around a while...and so have you, Sir. Respect is due from a newer forum chap as am I. Besides, with the forum handle I have dealt myself, I have a little extra work to do up front!

John has a great attention to details...and has a fine set of ears:)
Hope that he will take it up again in the future!
It is always good to take a break from such things...I can relate;)

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

Johnny is my bro at work, and he definitly still does mods, and I've never seen someone so passionate and precise about their work as is Johnny when he works on pedals, it's and obsession........

Re: Does John Spina still do mods?

The most affordable way to start on the "brown tone" journey is John's TS9 reissue, period. blues/classic rock/metal it will "brown" it up.
