does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

Try the ebay store banjomikes, That guy has thousands of them, in all colors and configurations. It is mindblowing!! Blue/pink invader, no problem, green/yellow custom, no problem. The list goes on!

I've bought from him before... excellent service and he does have a whole crapload of Shop Floor Customs.

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

sorry guys but if one of u confirmed that it worked with an an SG i would get it

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

A lot of guys on here run a sg with a custom-5 and a 59 neck, with VERY good results. Thought that was worth mentioning.

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

i'd say +1 for wymore, though instead of getting a '59 neck pickup, which will cost you over $60, i'd suggest getting an alnico 5 magnet for your stock neck pickup. the 490r is an a2 paf type pickup, and it's a great pickup, similar to a '59, but not with that a2 magnet. it's dark and muddy and doesn't have enough articulation in an SG, which is already a warm and midrangey instrument. if you swap out the alnico 2 for an alnico 5 though, you've got yourself gibson's version of a '59. the a5 has a more scooped characteristic with tighter lows and more articulate highs, which is perfect for an SG. i've gone through wayy too many neck pickups in my SG, and have come full circle back to this pickup. btw magnets only cost $5.00 on wymore's website.

and the C5 will be perfect for the bridge position, it'll get you all the old school crunch you want and can handle the higher gain "metallica" level stuff easy.

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

I would second SRS's idea for a-5 mag swap on the neck 490, while also suggesting a-8 swap on the bridge pickup (490?) Total cost: 13 bucks for mags, like 1 hour tops, labor.

Not having to spend money and swap pickups because you finally like the tone = Priceless!

Imo, of course.

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

One thing nobody has mentioned about teh JB in this thread is, the JB is VERY picky about what guitar it is in. A JB is wonderful in the right guitar but, absolutely horrible in the wrong one. The JB usually likes 25.5 scale guitars like super strats. So far, I am the only one that knows what guitar it is going into. You have a short scale axe which a JB usually does not agree with in most cases.

As far as what teh JB can do vs. the C5, they can do about the same thing. However, the Custom 5 will do classic stuff much better and some forms of metal much better due to a much tighter low end. The JB tends to be really loose in the low end especially on the wrong guitar but, it is still a bit loose anyway. The JB is your 80's metal pickup. THat was the 80's sound fo rthe most part, that si where it excels. Also, teh JB excels at solo's. Nothing sings like it and cuts like it. The downside, due to it being flubby and loose on the bottom, it can suck for rhythms.

JB sounds Great in old Kramers, Charvels. I have one in my LTD EC400ATS and sounds perfect there. I have one in a USA washburn neck thru that sounds great! I dont find them to be too picky.

C5s do a great job too! But to me, THE harmonic express is the C8!!

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

I'm guessing it's a Custom with an A8 magnet.

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

I have the '59 neck/Custom bridge in my SG. That combo takes me from Zepplin and Sabbath to Metallica and Lamb of god. That set was made for SG's.

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

I have an SG Junior 63 with a JB in the bridge that has been in this guitar for about 15 years. It sounds fantastic. I get a lot of compliments about my tone at gigs. I play heavy-ish blues to classic rock. I don't use any effects and plug straight into either a Laney VC50 or a Cornford Roadhouse 30. There is nothing else in the Duncan catalogue that appeals to me enough to want to replace it. If it got broken I'd be looking at either another JB or something from Bare Knuckles. Oh Yes - the harmonics are amazing.

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

so it would probly work on an sg special faded? and richard what do u use as ur neck pickup?

Re: does the JB-4 model humbucker have good harmonics

I'm guessing it's a Custom with an A8 magnet.

Correct! Amazing harmonics, Nice singing tone, total package!

Phily,
Dont let the overload of opinions kill yer buzz.. If you want to swap pups, then do it! Sounds like you have a good plan selling the old ones to offset your cost. You'll never know until you try, so if you dont swap, youll always wonder if it could have been better.
The C5 and 5 would be a good choice to start.. If the C5 doesnt blow your mind, you can simply swap magnets til you find what works in your guitar for your taste..
