Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

Re: Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

i find that my tone suffers unless i've just burned a bat of some extremely sticky purp.

Re: Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

I wipe my strings down with Johnson Baby Wipes, I think this was a tech tip from 17 second Zerberus!
(Man, you're a legend in my book, I threw up over the kid one time!)

smooth as a babys ass! lol
No really if you wipe your strings with a tissue it takes alot of black **** off and probley gives off a better tone. And my hands are clean all the time.

Re: Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

<insert comment about tone being affected by a completely unrelated thing here>

Re: Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

phew thank god you were joking...

remember the do pickguards rob tone thread!? lol

on a more serious note though, once a very talented classical player told me to touch my nose or run my fingers through my scalp before a dificult song to oil my fingers and play more easily from the reduced friction. It sounds darn dumb but it works!

Re: Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

Pickupguards can change tone,

When Ibanez are designing Steve Vai 's signature guitars

Steve vai compared direct mounted pickups vs pickupguard mounted pickups.

He choose pickupguard mounted pickups bec, according to him it adds more bass to the tone.

Can a big piece of plastic like a pickupguard alter or change the tone of a guitar. Yes.... but not dramatically ofcourse.

I just think its silly how someone can nitpick so much (I know it was a joke) about tone. Either it's there or it's not there. I'm a firm believer in that great tone begins with a great guitar and a great amp. Not caps or wire or any of that small stuff. If you have the two things I mentioned you're set. You can swap tubes, pickups, etc but you need the foundation. Note that I didn't say boutique, custom shop, handwired, or expensive. I said great.

great tone can come from cheap crap. it can come from fancy sweet stuff. it's not a formula. it's an art form.

Agree :)

I still have my first guitar which is made out of plywood.

I think we should stop focusing on getting the best gear (best guitar, best amps, best accessories, best pickups ........ etc) but we should focus more on

good guitar playing techniques :)

Stop worrying about about your guitar's tone, worry about how you play :)

I feel that, if I have just taken a really good dump, I can't ...

Play in tune anymore. :D

Re: Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

Yes

I notice
when I use

Finger oil = normal

Castrol Edge Sport 10w-60 = Fast guitar shredding

Johnsons baby oil = mellow tone

Canola oil = clear transparent tone

KFC fried chicken oil = meaty tone, crispy top end with extra sizzle

Crude oil = Raw Dirty Grimey Rock tones

Industrial machine oil = heavy metal tones

Perfume oils = Girls love it

Lemon oil = after i play, the fretboard seems cleaner :D

Last time i put lemon oil on my Paul i think i seriously over-oiled it. It still feels greasy almost two months later.

read the little disclaimer at the end of my post. Great and tone are pretty subjective. For example, the other day I played a Squier CV that blew my mind!

Re: Does the oil in your fingers/hands alter tone?

It has nothing to do with what has an effect on tone, but when I get good tone, my nipples get really hard. That's normal, right?
