Just dropped in the WLH into my new HSS Super strat. MJT finished alder body, hardtail. Nice and light (total axe weighs in at 7.1 pounds). Very resonant, big midrange. I tried the 78 in there, and it was just midrange overload.
The WLH sounds damn near perfect in there. Big, punchy, tight bottom. Articulate top, but not harsh. Plenty of mids. Sounds GREAT with SSL1s in the Mid and Neck. I've got the whole thing wired with a 250K master volume and 250K master tone, with great results. It really does sound similar to a 59, but more mids and push.
More of an even EQ curve than the 78.
More push than a 59.
Less treble slice than a PG.
Less compression and squish than a Custom or JB.
So for anyone looking for a slightly overwound PAF type tone in a superstrat, the WLH is great.
