Does this damage look substantial to you?

It seems to be a line going across the back of the headstock. It doesn't go into the wood, it just seems to be an imprint. The owner says he leaned it on a sharp edge and it slid.

I don't think the guitar has fallen, there is no evidence of that on the headstock or the body. The only "damage" is this line.

If I didn't know better, I'd say that it was just a glue line, but it's a weird orientation for one.

It's bizarre right? It looks like it's some side effect of the manufacturing process but the seller says it happened by accident.

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

Is there another line going down the edge of the headstock?

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

that's kind of an odd orientation for a break to be, and an odd place on the headstock as well, if it is a repaired break. You'd expect a break to be closer to the truss rod access/nut area rather then perfectly straight across at an angle. Plus it's got a volute which makes it less likely that it's a break.

maybe it happened as he said, when it was still new and the lacquer hadn't fully hardened yet.

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

If it is not in to the wood and nothing on the sides :dunno: Looks OK to me.

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

If it happened as the guitar fell over, I would think it would have an arc to it...

A glue line is unlikely there with the volute, though I have seen headstocks glued in the middle like that. It's just that usually, they're perpendicular to string pull.

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

Astro, if you have some good magnifying glasses or a set of jeweller's magnifying glasses, have a look at the lowest point of that line.

Close up it should look like a valley, and if you see a firm line or crack running down the lowest point, it's likely a break that was repaired and not necessarily covered up/re-lacquered properly. If it's a smooth bottom, it's just a dent in the finish.

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

Looks like an impression in the cheap-ass paint, from being leaned against something for a long time.

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

I don't think it's a break. It's too clean of a line IMO. It seems likely that it's a mark from being leaned against a desk or something. There is definitely no arc and I can't give you guys anyone details because I don't have the guitar yet.

I'll have better pictures soon... But it's not a break. It's only finish deep.

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

Is that line parallel to the bottom edge of the guitar?

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

if it's a break, it's very clean work
IMO that is more of a bargaining tool than anything else.
it would complement your jag nicely, too

Re: Does this damage look substantial to you?

This makes me suspect even more than someone leaned it against a sharp edge of a table or something causing the line.

That's what I'm thinking. It's just the finish.
