Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

Re: Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

Contrary to popular opinion, it should have zero effect on tone. There's a slight possibility that the pickup will resonate with the guitar, but that would only make it more prone to feedback.

Re: Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

Pickups always vibrate, but only roughly with the guitar.

Pretty sure that a long leg ring mount is fluffy enough to be audible.

Re: Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

I've always thought it had more of an effect on sustain rather than tone, really, and even at that it's subtle.

It sounds different and that's a fact. Better or worse is a matter of opinion.

Agreed, but it's subtle. If done properly it will increase sustain a hair. Tone wise... I'm not sure how to describe it. The sustain change is more obvious than the tone change though.

Why would the sustain change?

Sound, of course. But length of sustain?

Absorption of vibration by the looser mounting vs the pickup being screwed hard against the body and not being able to move in relation to the body. I think it's less the direct coupling to the body and transfer of vibration directly than it is that the pickup isn't allowed to move, which would thus change its position relative to the vibrating string and damping the relative amplitude.

Sorry if that sounds convoluted. It's morning and I haven't finished my caffeine. LOL

No, it is what I was thinking. I just cannot imagine that the dampening effect of a properly mounted rings humbucker is big enough to influence how the whole guitar sustains.

A sound change from the more rigid mount is far more likely IMHO.

Re: Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

Van Halen did it on his Frankenstein when he chiseled out the wood for a humbucker and threw out most of the pickguard. Used matchbooks to keep the pickup at the right height. Because he did it and now claimed it increased tone, millions drank the Koolade.

Actually, Fender Broadcaster and early Telecaster neck pickups were screwed straight to the body first.

Re: Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

Well the Tele neck pickup sits on top of rubber.

To make this really count you should probably have a hard bottom and the screw goes all the way.

BTW, can somebody recommend wood screws that are small enough to go through our humbucker legs without killing the thread for the regular screws?

Re: Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

I think it looks better (except on LPs where I think it is pretty equal aesthetically), but don't think it has that much effect on tone. Most guitars that have pickups "direct mounted" actually have them mounted with foam between the pickup and the body to act as the spring so you can adjust the height. I doubt that would make any difference tonewise. The only way I can see it affecting tone or sustain would be if it is hard mounted directly to the wood, or using something like this: http://www.fu-tone.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=96&products_id=261

Re: Does without pickup ring direct mount sound better?

Just saw the FU-Tone pickup mounting system. Yes the tone changed. But it´s a brass mounting plate, wouldn´t that change the magnetic field? If it does wouldnt it explain the change in tone?

In your opinion Pepe, is there a change in tone by direct mounting without a brass plate? I´m not saying better or worse, just different.
