Doing some research on a MIJ Strat. (Circa late '80's)

Skunk stripe looks good, but it's a hardtail. Interesting. I guess I'm not asking anything specific here, just thoughts and observations.

Not sure why there's a "but" when mentioning the skunk stripe and the bridge? Skunk stripes typically indicate that the neck and fretboard are one-piece, and the truss rod went in through the back, hence the stripe to plug the hole. If there's no stripe, then the fretboard was a separate piece of wood mounted onto the neck, which has been routed through the top for the rod. Bridge type would have no bearing on that.

I think the "but" may have been semantics, mixed with barley and hops. But . . . I don't think I'm going to talk my friend into trading this, so it's probably a moot point. So, I'll just put it all back together for him, and call it a day. Sweet, unusual Strat though.

I'll do more pics when it's back together.

Cool guitar! I am a semi-aficionado of the Fuji-Gen Fenders, especially the "vintage" models. My first electric was an '85 1950's style, and I have owned around a dozen MIJ/CIJ Fenders over the past 25 years. (I still have three: my first one, a '94 1950's style, and an Aerodyne Tele.) There were indeed hardtail models made. I love that guitar. Please contact me if your friend ever wants to sell or trade it. It'd be nice to have any and all original parts that he still has, but I'd buy it as you have shown it too. Thanks.

P.S. Has the body been "fake aged?"

How deep is the sun burst around the sides? Does it go all the way through the body carve on the backside?

Re: Doing some research on a MIJ Strat. (Circa late '80's)

IMO, either expertly faked or genuine MIJ. The Gotoh 'heads and the bridge - with its slightly wrongly proportioned saddles - suggest the latter.

The one thing that I would question is the neck anchor plate. I would have expected it to be plain, unstamped, and a little tarnished.

I "thought" that all the 50's-style were 2-tone Sunburst, but I could easily be wrong.

Looks pretty sharp, tho,I personally prefer 3TSB!But w/Rosewood,go figure.

I guess I got nuthin',but looks pretty neat too me.

Those MIJ Strats are really great guitars! My dad had a mid 80's MIJ for a long time, gave it to my cousin. Comfortable necks with high attention to detail.

Cool guitar although the fake aging is on the tacky side... ;)

Too bad he tried to relic it. MIJ Fender's (and that damn Fuji-Gen factory!) make some of the best guitars I've played. I'll put my MIJ up against any MIA.

Nope – not at all. They were never very accurate reissues, just well constructed guitars (for the most part) that had the general look of '50's or '60's ones.

Re: Doing some research on a MIJ Strat. (Circa late '80's)

Essentially, "Fifties" meant one-piece maple neck and "Sixties" meant separate rosewood fingerboard. The sealed gear Gotoh 'heads are hardly period correct for either decade.

Yup, and yup. He regretted it as soon as he did it. Now we're trying to figure out how to fix it.

To look "proper," the poor thing needs to be refinished, unfortunately. There really isn't a good looking way to touch up polyurethane. One option is to strip it and refinish it. That is a LOT of work, and easy to screw up if you get impatient. Another option is to smooth the damaged areas, reprime, and paint over what's there. Finally, you can try to touch up just the damaged areas, and accept that it won't look great. Either way, the guitar has become worth very little.

Sharpies or Paint?

Or a sticker!
j/k

I've "tried" to semi-retire my '87 '62-style,but no other Strat I have can match it...

Re: Doing some research on a MIJ Strat. (Circa late '80's)

The body looks out of reference for me. Hardtail. The sunburst specifics. The bridge aging is not in line with aging on the neck hardware. Overall I suspect this neck didn't originally belong to the body.

Still looks like a good chance to get a great neck and a hardtail body for variety.

Re: Doing some research on a MIJ Strat. (Circa late '80's)

Poly is a royal pain to strip but for a true MIJ body I would say it would be worth it (if it were mine) to have it stripped and repainted. I wouldn't go with the Sunburst finish though...
