the new epiphone valve juniors are great little tube amps only 5w and cheap so if it gets nicked you can buy another!

also, i have always found the little spider and valvetronix amps cool, but kind of lacking. but i am hearing from experience that tubes are bad in dorms. now i am just confused.....

Great thing about a modeler is that it doesn't have to be a traditionally housed amplifier. I look back at my dorm room and the space even my little combo took up and think about how kick ass a POD or a Guitar Port would have been back then. AFAIK, PODs are gigable with the right stuff to hook them up to.

A good option for you might be to try a Blues Jr (or amp of similar style) with a Sinver Dragon Pedal. You can also pick up a Weber Load Dump and still be under $500 with some used things. It will provide 3 workable tones at reasonable volume. Or alternately a tube screamer, load dump, Epi Valve head and a cheap 1x12 cab.

I don't know if this was mentioned yet, but why not use the POD + Atomic Reactor?

i have an atomic already... its just seems way too big for a dorm room. i duno if you have seen one, but they are much bigger than they look.

Plus they are very loud! They are quite surprising amps.

Why do you think headphones are a pain? Honestly, this is your best option. I use my XT with Sennheiser headphones all the time, and it sounds awesome.

If you can find a Hughes & Kettner Metal Screamer/Shredder, Cream Machine, or Blues Master, those are half rack tube amps that don't need a speaker load. So they can be used with monitors, headphones, or a little cabinet. I had the Blues Master (basically a pumped up vintage Champ circuit) and now I have a Metal Shredder (not really metal, more like a hot rodded Fender circuit) now and it's great. I've gigged with that alone (plus an OD pedal) and it was perfect, and I can use it as a preamp, too. Right now I use it "bypassed" (non-overdrive) as a power amp for a 2x10. Very versatile little box for college. All the Hughes & Kettner stuff is good at low volumes, and has good range on the volume knobs so you're not "either off or too loud."

Also check out the Tube Man pedals, into a studio monitor setup. Those are wonderful, and double as an amp channel expander on the floor. You can use it into the fx return of any amp to supply a versatile tube pre also.

I think the main thing you need for college is a tube preamp section, so your practicing and jamming retains the right dynamics and feel. Back in the day if I would play my Sansamp or other S.S. pres for too long at a time, it would get fatiguing not having the "real" tube dynamics.

i have never heard of those h&k amps before, but they sound really cool. who can tell me more about them (frankfalbo, please feel free to add any more info about them)? also, if i went with the epi valve jr... what is the advantage of the valve jr head over the combo? just the ability to use different speaker cabinets?

not so much a pain... as just unsatisfying and a hassle of wires. i know, i sound like a wimp with... but with the power block , guitar cable and headphones all running to the little bean, its kind of obnoxious for me. i like guitar to amp. maybe a pedal (ts9 or ds1). i am gona keep researching my options, but in the meantime i will go there with my POD, toneport and headphones. if i do in fact decide to get a new amp i will have it shipped to me there.

Here's a Metal Shredder that sold for $150. That's the one I have. There's a Blues Master up right now that you might have to fight me for. :) But if I win it, I'll sell my Metal Shredder, so maybe that'll be better. The big difference between the two is that the Metal Shredder gets far more overdrive. It has 2 12AX7's instead of one. There's an output knob in the back, and two gains on the front. They're interactive. One pushes the robust overdrive, and the second is for full saturation. They're great little boxes, and they put out tube amp sound at any volume.

If you got the Blues Master you'd need an overdrive pedal. The Cream Machine is just two knobs. So there's no tonal control. The sound is great, but it's not versatile. Still, the Cream Machine can be your "power section" for a good pedal.
