Doubled up single coil?

I was wondering if there was a humbucker that sounded like a 'doubled up single coil', with more single coil clarity etc, and when coil split sounded more like an authentic fat single coil, or somewhere close. (Sorry for my lack of technical terms, still relatively new to the endless world of pickups)

Re: Doubled up single coil?

Good news bud, it's been around for a while, and it's called the stag mag, made by Seymour Duncan.

The 59 custom hybrid is also a great coil splitter since it uses a hotter coil from the custom family without being as hot and modern as those guys, but the stag mag is exactly what you described.

Re: Doubled up single coil?

Try the Schaller Super Golden 50's, it's a Stag Mag with flat pole pieces.
A bit HiFi without some of the rudeness and character of a true PAF or single coil
but absolutely shines with any mod, device or gain you can throw at it.

Re: Doubled up single coil?

The problem with the 'double singlecoil' is that if half is even a vintage strength s/c, the full pickup is hot as hell. Vintage level is 6-6.5k of 42 gauge, so double is 12-13K. Now put this up against pickups of thinner wire and you get something almost Duncan Distortion level of output. So the 'full vs split' issue still occurs......big volume drop, plus tonal shift.

My suggestion (not really a cheap one unfortunately) is a regular-humbucker sized Wide Range Humbucker....The Creamery in UK does them. Rod mags with the 3+3 design, and if you do a spin a split then you can dial out part of a coil for a thinner more strat/tele-ish tone.

Re: Doubled up single coil?

Thank You for the advice. Another added thing is that it needs to fit in a P90 cavity. I've seen the custom shop do humbucker in a p90 casing, but are there any alternatives

Re: Doubled up single coil?

The Stag Mag certainly could be made in a P90 size, You could also get something like a Custom P90 and have SD add a coil tap somewhere towards the middle of the coil. They can also make P90 stacks, and tap them or split them for a more chimey sound.
