Down and Dirty With a 68 Fender Bassman

SDUGF regulars will probably have seen me extolling the virtues of my 68 Bassman, and it's not without reason. It's an incredible amp that takes whatever pedals you throw at it with splendor. It also sounds incredible cranked, but I don't do that too often because it's a little bit louder than I'd like and because it's not quite heavy enough for the music my band plays.

But I had a few minutes today where the house was empty and I decided to forego the pedalboard, plug straight in, and turn the old ***** up loud. I mean LOUD. Channels jumped, both volumes at 5. It was rattling my walls loud. But the tone... oh, the tone. Ridiculous overdrive that wasn't at all ratty or scooped (two complaints I've seen about the bassman's overdrive. This is probably due to the mods that the ever gracious forum bro zzmoore did for me a while back. He overhauled the amp and tuned the bass channel more to my needs about a year and a half ago, and it's been my baby ever since) but it screamed ROCK. And it's such a dynamic amp too. The cleans that I got just by turning down the volume on my guitar were just as much fun to play with as the distorted tones, and it's not often I have that experience.

Anyway, I decided to record it for you guys, because I'm just a nice guy. :naughty: It's just my HSH Strat straight into the Bassman, only a spectraflex cable between them. I only had one shot at it before the house became re-occupied, so it's sloppy, but it's a good demonstration of how my amp sounds.

The clip starts off with the guitar volume at 3. I bump it up to 5-6 at 1:12 and floor it at 1:55.

Enjoy.

The guitar player (Kate I think her name is) from a New York band called Skinny Blonde and Goodlooking used a 68 Fender Bassman and her tone was absolutely nude-back-flipping-crazy-insane-like-a-monkey-on-acid. I mean...her tone was totally sick.

I'm gonna bookmark this thread and check your sound out when I get home from work. These amps are awesome.

I have a Blues Deluxe that just kicks and also takes pedals like a champ.

Can't wait to hear it.

Later,

... I'm really, really wishing I'd never sold my '69 Bassman 50 right now.

Re: Down and Dirty With a 68 Fender Bassman

Was it overloading the mic at the end? It sounded very close to a dyeing fuzz face at times. Cool sound. I also wonder if it's the Texas Heat (you use that right?). I had Texas Heats, and recently switched to the Swamps because of that fuzz like compression at high volume... But I'm looking for a tighter more percussive sound than you I believe.

Either way, I always dig your threads and sounds.

Just sneaked a taste at work...

Viscous overdrive bro. Ragged...nasty...on the edge.

Totally awesome. I'm typing this because I know you can't hear me now. :D

Thanks for all the complements, guys! I totally appreciate it.

I've learned my lesson from selling a few pedals and a guitar or two that I still miss - I'm NEVER getting rid of this thing. Even if I ever need money enough to sell gear, the nice thing is that I couldn't get enough for this amp to make it worth selling.

IIRC it was clipping the mic pretty hard at the end of the clip. Like I said, it was ridiculously loud.

I do have a Texas Heat in there, along with a Cannabis Rex. I like the Texas Heat a lot - if I snag the half back Mesa 2x12 I'm trying to get and I don't like the Mesa C90, the first speaker I try will be a Texas Heat. And you're right, I like a lot of loose low end with just the right amount of tightness. It's hard to achieve, but I finally found all of the right tools to make it happen.

How would you describe the differences between the Swamp Thang and the Texas Heat? Despite my happiness with my speaker setup, the Swamp Thang still interests me...

Re: Down and Dirty With a 68 Fender Bassman

Swamp Thang to me is a bit louder and a bit more open and percussive sounding. Almost 'harder' sounding... If the Texas Heat has a warm smooth like sound, the swamp is a warm tight like sound.

To me it's a warmer thicker and better evm-12L. Texas Heat is great, but for my stuff the swamp is king so far. Really responds to dynamics too.

Nice, the end reminds me of the tone Hendrix got on some stuff. And before that, great clean tone!!!
