For the last few years i have focused so much on alternate picking, now i can't get very much speed at all with my down picking. I'm trying to play the intro to Number of the beast by the Maiden and i just can't get up to the record's speed. Any tips or practice exercises for getting downpicking quicker? Please don't suggest learning Metallica songs, not my cup of tea at all!

downpick palmuted powerchords for like 10 minutes straight, no breaks, tryign to get as fats as you cna till you cant go faster than slow down again then wor it up again, not stopping, stretch, repeate.
or try doin like 2 quick down picks, short pause(x4) then 3 quick down pics, short pause(x4), then 4, then 5, ect
i have a very very fast downpick so i can post more exercises if you need em

the speed of this downpicking really blew my mind when i saw this band live, as well as the general insanity of it.

Dude ,play some Overkill-Elimination...ANd Anthrax Indians!It will be very good for yoir down strokes!Don't try the live versions now.It can hurt you tho!^^

Honestly, just downpick as quickly as you can consistently until the muscles in your forearm are on fire. Then rest for 10-15 minutes and do it again, add infinitum. That's the absolute best way to increase downpicking speed. You just do it 'till it hurts, over and over and over. It actually won't take as long as you think to build up speed with it, either.

I love Anthrax, they're one of my favorites. However, years & years & years ago, I read a Danny Spitz interview where he was saying everything had to be downpicked to get that heavy sound. Then I bought the "Oidivnikufesin" live VHS, & watched them alternate pick everything. So I threw that "it's gotta be downpicked" thinking right in the trash.
