DR Blues 9-42 ruined my tele sound, need help for replacements..

Hi!

I should prefix by saying that I play my guitar through a clean pedal or DAW and then through my home theatre system that includes tweeters, powered sub, and the solid state home theatre amp so I am very familiar with my Tele's twang, harmonics, and tone. I don't have tubes or cabinets colouring the sound. I get a full range of sound in clarity.

-I have a Squire Tele about 10 years old made in China.
-The guitar came with 9-42 Fenders strings (re-branded D'Addario's).
-I never changed the strings as I'm an 'on again off again' player.
-6 yrs ago I got Duncan Vintage pick-ups. Can't remember which.
-I noticed that I was able to get perfect tone similar to Syd Barrett - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIER8JSz9sA&t=25s
-It's more of a shrill twang which is what I like.
-I usually have my tone knob at only 1/3. Volume turned down also.
-I had no idea that the sound could have been from strings. I thought it was the pickup and such.

So I wanted to get strings that were more faster action. Sure enough everyone had a different opinion. People kept saying to get pure nickels and many liked the round cores. You know, the people saying "Since 1972 I've used xyz and I keep coming back to that"

Several said "i tried all the strings, and the best were DR Blues". These are round core and pure nickel wound. But many said do NOT get pure nickels because they don't sound good.

I got the DR Blues (pure nickel, round core) and put them on. NOTE: When I changed my strings, I noticed that some of my frets were chewed a tad bit.. just a little. That was surprising since I'm a fairly causal player.

Anyhow, after the DR Blues were put on, the sound was SO THIN, and so bad, that I thought I must have knocked the pick-up lose or something.

They were also LESS slinky despite them being round core. I heard pure nickel is less slinky. Now I agree. I played all night adjusting the pick-up height, the truss bar, the string height. Nothing helped. It was like trying to get blood from a stone.

The strings are thin sounding. They lack harmonics and depth.

And here's the thing, while straight through with colour it might not seem like a huge difference, but when you add mild colour (overdrive, re-verb, etc) then it makes ALL the difference in tone and the poor performance really shines though.

Playing clean, actually, that's where you hear it the least. It's when you decide to setup your rig and play, that's when you notice the difference. But naturally, those who use cabs or fuzz would likely never notice the difference. You need to play through home theatre or headphones to hear the difference.

I recorded the difference between the two strings, uncoloured, directly in the computer. There's harmonics that you can hear in the old strings that are not present in the new ones. (I'll put the vid up later).

The strings are so bad, that I'm going to take them off. Before I do, I was hoping that those who 'know the difference' or 'know what I'm talking about' can help me chose some good replacement strings that are maybe faster action than my old ones, but with a similar sound.

Thanks a bunch!

Mais, wha:?:

Those strings rounded out my tone, even on the Fly Deluxe (a naturally bright axe).

Re: DR Blues 9-42 ruined my tele sound, need help for replacements..

round core strings are stiffer usually as far as i know and nickel has less output and high harmonics than nickel plated steel.

the fact that 10 year old strings sound better kinda baffles me. i would think any new string would sound better than a 10 year old set

Pure nickel strings emphasize the fundamental of the note,at the expeonse of overtones and harmonic complexity. For some setups and styles its a good thing.

Try a set.of slinkys, dad xp, or boomers.

What happened is that your ears got used to a lot of unconventional variables.
Once you introduced something conventional, such as fresh strings, it changed your sound.

If dead strings was part of your sound, you've been doing things wrong for way too long. It's probably time to revamp your setup. :scratchch

Try D'addario's again try the Jazz blues set, I recommend the EXL115 set.

I totally agree. I honestly cant see how someone would recommend pure Nickel considering what it does to the sound. I know everyone is different, but wow. These are like harmonic killers to me.. I realize most people going through coloured cabs, pedals, and standard 'gear' would likely not notice that much. With my setup its' very noticeable.

One thing I learned though, there is *NO* way into EQ'ing your way into harmonics and complexity. If anyone in the future is reading this.. trust me I tried for hours. You can't get these strings to sound twangy and full.

Try a set.of Slinkys, dad xp, or boomers.

I just got back and got some Slinkies.. I'll make some time to put them on and compare them.

Right now I have a new semi hollow body and am not pleased at all with the tone. I got Slinkies for those also at 11-48 and will also put them on soon. There is not much twang at all from this semi hollow. It's an E339 replica. The sound is very 'standard' and a bit dry. But not as bad as the Tele with the DR Blues.

I'm not at all trying to be rude but as soon as I got to "home theater" I tuned out...

There is no way you'll ever get a good guitar sound from that kind of a set up and as for all this harmonics discussion, harmonics from overdrive or distortion from either the pre amp or power amp in the amp or from a pedal of some kind and there is no real way of getting harmonic overtones from a home theater system.

Also worth mentioning if you are in fact using a home theater and a DAW as some sort of make shift amplification devise and are were indeed using 10 year old strings and were for real unhappy with the change in going to new strings...ANY new strings then your idea of tone is wildly skewed from what people want to hear and what the industry strives to provide us.

I hope your new strings help but I'm betting a large amount of money you'll be in the same boat with slinkys...

Yup. Your 12" paper cone coloring the heck out of your guitar tone has more audio range than my home theatre setup. Sure if that's what you think go ahead.

How about instead of posting slander and misinformation all over the internet you put your old 10 year stock strings back on your guitar and keep playing them forever. Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about.

Being a bit of a home audio junkie myself and know that even in the crappiest of home theater receivers, the power amps are designed to be as clean and as transparent as possible, I have to ask you something. How in the hell are you getting any kind of harmonic complexity out of it? What kind of speakers are using? Brand? 2 or 3 way? Are you using this setup in surround sound mode? Adding in any of the receivers preamp digital processing?

From personal experience, I know that if you're direct into a receiver, you're not going to get any kind of gain to produce harmonics. If you drive a receiver hard enough to clip, it's not only going to sound worse than any cheap solid state guitar amp, but it's doing really bad things to your speakers.

I'll admit electric guitars have some harmonic content on their own, but with strings that old, even if they were only occasionally played, I find it hard to believe that they have any redeeming qualities left in them.

People can't hear the difference of their strings because they don't have transparent audio.

Why do you think people listen to music and TV on normal speakers instead of guitar cabs?

Cabs colour sound and take away tons of range. So do many amp headers. Of course you won't be able to hear tones when you change strings when you have that kind of setup.

I can hear tone through my setup. The difference is night and day. One is complex, the other is dry and thin.

Oh yes the bass has also been destroyed with the DR Blue strings. I have the powered sub-woofer so I can actually hear these things. Guitar cabs cut out all the high and lows in trade of SPL.

I'd recommend getting a pair of studio monitors and plugging in your amps and pedals into those. Then you'd get some accurate sound of what your guitar and gear are actually doing.

+1, Crush. Thanks for the laughs. :friday:

I'll be honest here. I'll sometimes use the amplitube or ampkit apps on my iphone and run it into to my home theater receiver and put it on analog direct to mess around and play at low volumes. Even then though, it's still the app producing all the content. The receiver is just reproducing the source with more volume. There is no interaction between the preamp or power amp of the receiver causing any of the harmonic complexity. It's all modeled and sent from the app on the phone.

Do we still have The Well?

It's where new and longtime members have an interview session for a week, and then it's put in The Vault. :32:

If you found your sound using Fender branded D'Addarios why not get another set of those?
