Dr. Z Route 66 - anyone tried this?

I got a chance to buy a Dr. Z Route 66. I know it is a 32 watt head, but I have absolutely no idea as what to expect tonewise, and I am curious about toneshaping as you only have Volume, Bass, Treble.

I have to drive for 3 hours to try it, so any info would be great.

It's a fantastic amp. LOUD AS HECK!

Ultralinear power supply means to my ears, it went from soft and easy on the ears to ultraloud in a small twist of the volume knob. Once it gets loud, addtional twist of the volume knob gets it dirtier and dirtier. I ran a power soak type attenuator with it. Too freaking loud once it got dirty.

This is not a bedroom amp. It needs to be gigged. And in a small club, they'll be telling you to turn it down.

On the plus side, it runs KT66HP power tubes (stock) and uses an EF86 preamp tube in V1. It's a beautiful amp that IMO needs a master volume. But, simple and built like a tank. I sold one for $850 USD a year or two ago.

Think of the Rt. 66 as a big fat edgy clean tone that sustains really nice. Most people equate sustain with preamp gain, but this one sings in a clean and dense sort of way. Like a good cranked Bassman or JTM 45.

Well, this amp is used and is about $ 2000. I guess I'll have to move....

It sounds like a cool amp though, so maybe I'll give it a try.

$2000 in Norway might not equate to 850 in the US. But, for far less than 2K you can buy a new one here.

i have one. amazing tone, very thick. gearjoneser got it right, reminds me of a bassman or jtm 45. if you want distortion at usable levels this is not your amp.

the bass and treble knobs feel like they control a gain stage too, you can get a little bit of an overdrive if you dime one or both of them. I can't really get a bad tone out of mine, except that i need to replace the ef86 tube and they can get expensive.

go try it and see if you like it

He he! Told you prices in Norway are sick. A SLO 100 costs about US$ 6000 here.
