Dream Theatre tone

How do you get that synth-like tone that dream theatre's guitar has on certain parts of songs , like at 4:39 of Stream of Consciousness.

Re: Dream Theatre tone

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's Jordan Rudess on keyboards and not John Petrucci. Before I really got into DT, I also thought that a lot of the keyboard solos were actually guitar, until I realized that those synth-sounding solos had no pick attack.

Re: Dream Theatre tone

Yep. That synth sound is a synth. You hear a lot of guitar/keyboard solo trade offs like that in some earlier Yngwie stuff too.

For my tastes, I love keyboards and I love the sounds and atmosphere they can bring to a song. But I HATE it when they try to sound like a guitar with endless flying solos. All too often they end up sounding like a flat, whiny, single-coil wannabe tone. They sound great when they sound like keyboards, not so great when they try to sound like guitars.

Re: Dream Theatre tone

id prefer it if he played solos with a grand piano sound - that would sound dead classy

Re: Dream Theatre tone

its amazing, when i saw them live i was pretty surprised, the keyboard guy got some NICE guitar solo tones for somethign that wasnt a guitar!

Re: Dream Theatre tone

Jordan Rudess is nasty... by far one of the most talented, if not THE most talented keyboard player ever. And yes, I agree, he gets pretty amazing tones with his keyboard.

Re: Dream Theatre tone

Speaking of keyboard stuff for Dream Theater... after listening to Live Scenes From NY compared to Once in a Livetime I can see why they let Derek Sherinian go. Derek seems so one-dimensional and thin live and Jordan Rudess' sound is a lot more expansive and bold. But I still think Kevin Moore did it the best on Images and Words and Awake. Plus he wrote lyrics too

Re: Dream Theatre tone

yeh, Kevin Moore is my fave too
his tone is alot more 'vintage' not digital
i also think he listens to the music better - all rudess solos are about speed and flash
moore had more emotion
well thats my opinion anyways
