I use Drop C occasionally for when I write, but the music in my head is almost always in D Standard. About 80% of the material I come up with for my band is in D Standard, with maybe 3 songs in Drop C.

I'm all standard, I'll go as far as dropped-D but thats it. Nothing else.

I rarely use D. I like to use drop/standard C for acousticy things or fuzzed out electric stuff with a lot of drone notes.

Sounds like you guys are a bunch of oldschool metalheads with your closer to standard tunings. I'm a Drop D nut myself but it seems like most metal today is tuned down to Drop C and below.

And MikeS, I'm talking about the Drop C where you drop the low E string down to D and then bring all strings down a step.

Same here, though I really only use Drop-D with any regularity on my acoustic.

I use it this way also- alot of the Crosby,Stills, Nash, and Young stuff was written with dropped D tuning- Bon Jovi has been known to use it as well as the Doobie Bros-but lately, I've been into the Keith Richards 5 string open G tuning.

it seems like most metal today is tuned down to Drop C and below.

My favorite band: Lamb of God uses Drop D tuning, so I have one guitar dedicated to that tuning. They're just one example of a (awesome) metal band today that doesn't use Drop C and lower.

Anyway which tuning do you guys prefer for metal? Drop D or Drop C?

For me, it's between drop D and drop A (for one fingered power chords anyway).

No kidding? I'm not a big fan of Lamb of God but I do know they sound heavy as hell! Surprised to hear they only tune down to Drop D, sweet!

What really got me into Drop D were the songs Bad Magick and Vampires by Godsmack. And the rest is history...

Do any of you who play drop C and D have any calluses on your fingers? What gauge strings would you use to keep the tension tight enough so chords don't sound like @ss?

Try playing .010 or .011 gauge strings at standard A=440 tuning for a few hours.

Used to play in standard all the time back when I was in a band that played nothing but classic and 80's rock/metal. Then tuned down to C and have now found myself down in B for the new band. Not as muddy as I thought it would be, took a lot of tweaking as far as intonation and tone go but came out with a lot of clarity. Match that nasty bottom end with the dueling guitar craziness and it makes for a good time. Trivium and Avenged Sevenfold are two other bands that are also only in Drop D. Great guitarists in both of those bands too. I feel kind of outcast now because I tune so low Lol.

I can do any drop tuning, they're all fun to me. But I would say I prefer the sounds of Drop C, because it's just that much heavier.

Man my first band was all Drop C... now I don't go below drop D. Actually, in my band I'd prefer to use E standard, but since two of our songs require Drop D, I might as well just play everything in D and avoid the time it takes to switch instruments, especially when dealing with a wireless (which I dont have yet, but will need to rent or buy one for a major upcoming gig)

i very rarely use drop tunings. i can just never think of anything to play in drop tunings. im most often in E or sometimes Eb, with the occasional D (CoC) or Db (sabbath, down).

Drop-D with my V for in the band...

and I keep my 7 tuned to drop-a because I like playing standard and drop tuned stuff and am lazy...actually it just sounds awesome haha. Umm, I've tried drop-g before and that's just insane, it's like cranking the flabbiness, definetely a 12-60 or 62 for adequate tension for that tuning haha.

I use Drop D aalmost 100% of the time actually i do use it 100% of the time. I play lamb of god influenced stuff. But i used to play standard everytime i played, but not anymore it just is weird to me. I use to not be able to stand drop d, i couldnt play in it, so I always used standard, but then after awhile I got used to it and now i LOVE IT!

I'm surprised no one has said Eb yet..... but anyway,

I use 12's and I play in standard, sometimes drop D. On my 7 string, the low A string is a 80. I don't play crazy bends, so it works just fine for me.
