Are there any drum machines that will play drum tracks from MIDI files? All the ones I see can only be programmed on the drum machine itself, and is limited to a few songs. Anything available?

Re: Drum Machines that play MIDI files

Any drum sound module should be able to do this assuming it supports general midi protocall which most anything in the last 15 years or so should

basically if its got a midi input it should be able to do it. Very old machines like the Roland TR808 were pre midi and worked via CV gate so they wouldnt do it but ever Alesisis, Boss etc I've had will do it fine.

Drum tracks are usually midi channel 10 btw

Re: Drum Machines that play MIDI files

Can you give me the web address of a Drum Machine that does that?

Re: Drum Machines that play MIDI files

If you're hooking up a drum machine to play a drum track created on a computer sequencer, just make sure the MIDI track with the drum program is on the same track as the drum machine. Press "play" on the computer, and you're good to go.

If you're talking about playing back a drum part created on a multi-timbral synth, the General MIDI system was implemented to solve that problem.

Just google any website for your home nation; Roland is closer to Oz than the US.

edit: sequencing songs on the drum machine itself is limited to the memory size; you're better off getting a computer sequencer system. Try an old laptop with a USB/MIDI output.

I sometimes use an Alesis SR-16 which has MIDI thru capability, but beware when recording it; the preprogrammed tracks aren't true to the beat and will throw ProTools out of sync. Admittedly, mine is 20 years old, though and it's entirely possible that they've made improvements in this aspect.

Re: Drum Machines that play MIDI files

The SR-16 presets, as I understand it, were played directly into the software by studio players, so the "human" aspect is retained through Quantization.

As for being able to create a MIDI drum sequence on the PC and load it into an external drum machine, nothing does that, to my knowledge. The only way to get it done is to use a MIDI interface for your PC running out to your external drum machine, and the audio outs of the drum machine running into the PC (Line In, USB, etc).

Your program (sequencer) also has to be set up to use the correct MIDI Out port (default is internal synth).

However, if you're going that route, and you're not going to program the drums in the unit yourself, you may as well go for FXPansion BFD 2. It has way better samples than any drum machine, and it can load in MIDI drum files easily.
