Darkness on the edge of Tone
Based on zenmindbeginner's recommendation a couple/few months back, I purchased the 60s retro kit from Drums On Demand yesterday to experiment with sample replacement using Logic Drummer.
The process was suprisingly simple:
- convert Logic Drummer track to MIDI
- add a software instrument track
- copy/paste the MIDI data from the drum track
- insert Ultrabeat drum machine onto the new track
- replace the stock drums sounds with the DOD samples
Whilst I love Logic Drummer for writing, the drum sounds leave a lot to be desired. Using the Retro 60s drum samples gave the whole thing a new lease on life, and sonically, they are fantastic: blended into the mix really well before I added any processing at all.
I am still in the experimental stage and it will take considerable tweaking to get it just right, but thus far I am very impressed.
There is a little bit of mapping that needs to take place between Logic Drummer and Ultrabeat, but it's quite minor and was a breeze to sort out. Velocity info was also faithfully rendered between Logic Drummer and Ultrabeat ... really not sure what kind of wizardry is at play to make this work, but it does, so I am not complaining!
