DS-1 and SD-1

How can I use the DS-1 and SD-1 to form a smooth sounding distortion. Or should i just use the SD-1 by itself.

Re: DS-1 and SD-1

IMHO, I've found that both of these pedals (in their stock form) are anything but smooth. I had mine modded by a fellow at the Fender Forum and my favorite is the SD-1. He managed to take away the fuzzy top end and replace it with a nice underlying crunch. I know a fellow here does mods on these pedals and people here have been very pleased with the results.

Re: DS-1 and SD-1

do you have both pedals?

if so, just mess with it man, see which sounds better first in the chain & go from there

Re: DS-1 and SD-1

The SD1 is an overdrive and is actually smoother and can be darkened up more on the tone control..

The DS1 is pretty bright and over the top by comparison...I find that even dialing back the drive on the Taiwanese DS1s and the tone control, these pedals are still bright and even harsh..The DS1 is a distortion pedal..

well if you roll back both the tone & gain knob all the way it gets pretty warm, but thats about the only way

I still find the DS1 pretty bright overall, even with the tone dialed back..Don't you agree Drew?

I think this depends on the guitar. With a HB equipped axe you can roll out the treble reasonably well. It can be better though as the mod community has shown. With a strat its much more of a problem. SD-1 was BOSS's answer to the tubescreamer so it makes sense it is a bit darker and voiced a little more strat friendly.

I agree there are differences between the Japanese made examples and the later Taiwanese made units but the they aren't as extreme as some on the 'net would want you to believe. Regardless of where they are made no two are going to sound exactly the same. With the DS-1 being stupidly cheap there ain't no reason not to have several to choose from! :)
