He's the man - one of these days I am going to go and see him and take a collection of my pedals for him to do or worse take his left handed (foot) pedals!!Lewguitar said:John's to humble! I've been threatening to send him a box of pedals to work wonders on for a while now, because according to the guys here, John STRATDELUXR97 does great pedal mods his own bad self. :cool3:

I tried to like it but it just didn't do it for me. I can squeeze off harmonics and get those Jeff Beck kind of growls on the low E sring alot better with my stock MIJ DS-1.\ and the clean tone when I roll the volume on the guitar down to 1/2 way or less is alot better on the unmodded pedal.
One thing: those old fashioned 60's style carbon batteries really do sound smoother and better than modern, longer lasting, alkaline 9 volt batteries or battery eliminators in overdrive pedals.

I have the actual Boss factory schematic for the DS1 and the SD1 and the component values are otherwise the same? Maybe it's component tolerences and aging? I don't get any MIJ DS1s and maybe it's because they sound alot better..Funny isn't it.. :13:
Lewguitar said:Couldn't tell you John...I've never gotten into microchips and the like. Working on that stuff is not something I have a talent for! I do know that Steve Vai has mentioned that the MIT and MIJ version of the DS-1 sound about the same to him but that he does prefer the MIJ version. I've AB'd the MIJ and MIT version (both unmodded)...I heard very little difference between the two, but did feel that the MIJ DS-1 had a slightly more natural tone...maybe with something nicer about the mids.

Stratcat said:All I am trying to find out is, does anyone else think the stock DS-1 sounds like crap. No big deal buddy.![]()
STRATDELUXER97 said:Well ok then....LOL....The Taiwan made DS-1s sound like crap, but Lew states his early Japan made one doesn't...Lew's earlier model uses standard 8 pin opamps like a Tube Screamer and the Taiwan made ones use an inline opamp..The recent DS-1s sound kind of bright and buzzy to me...Harsh is a good word also..This is the exact reason that I Learned how to mod this pedal...It was either mod it or sell it...

Stratcat said:That's what I thought John. It is to bad that the sound quality of Boss pedals has gone downhill over the years. I was also trying to find out if you modded the Japan or Taiwan pedals, or both? I know you do great work. I just do not want to be stuck with a pedal that might not give me the Tone I am looking for. Brother George.
