Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

I'm looking at options other than V30s. I need something that's dark like the V30, yet with a fuller midrange that isn't quite so focused on the upper mids like the V30 is.

I recently tried an MC-90 (Classic Lead) and it really filled out the low midrange and fattened the sound up. Only problem is the speaker is too dark on it's own and guts the Recto of it's punch.

i was gonna say V3o right from the get go.

you know whats worked for me? a marshall cab with 30s or 75s. helps focus the sound, to my ears.

Re: Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

Long time no see dude. ;) How ya been?

I'm running a Dual Rec Tremoverb right now with 2 Emi Governors and 2 Emi Man-O-Wars. The Governors are like fatter V30s with no upper mid spike, and the MOW's are like fatter, louder G12T75s. That combo, as sosomething says, is "The Business".

Good. Just distancing myself from the internet for awhile so I could concentrate on playing guitar instead of reading about it. :)

I'm currently using V30s/Man-O-Wars in an Orange 4x12 and I'm not totally cool with it. I liked it at first, but now not so much. The mid scoopage of the Man-O-Wars isn't my bag.

I think I got mine for 80 new.

Ah, I see. Those speakers aren't midrange-dominant, and they're pretty fat and raunchy. That's why I like 'em.

Have you looked at a G12H30 or the Wizard (Emi's take on that sound)?

I have been looking at the M30s, in part due to their volume reduction and in part because I hear they have a thicker, slightly chunkier midrange.

The H30s have been off my radar... probably because I can't find a recording of them that really thrills me.

I should point out that I don't use my Recto for a 'metal' sound. More of a dark hard rock sound (think Alice in Chains). My gain is around 4 for rhythm and just over 5 for lead. Bass on both channels is at 9:00.

Personally, I find the Vin 30's, H30's, and Greenbacks to fulfill everything I think I need, but if I were to split hairs and go further, and had money, I'd move toward Scumback speakers. But I can't and see no reason.

So, long story short if I had a cab filled with each of those speakers I should be able to mix and match with (almost) any head and find what I need?

And... just out of curiosity... how bright are G12Hs? Do they have a lot of low mids? And is the midrange fairly even or is it stronger in one part of the spectrum or another? Most recordings I hear of them make them sound scooped. But, I don't know if that's because the speaker is scooped, the amp is scooped, or they just don't record as well as G12Ms/V30s.

Re: Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

G12H30's are cool speakers but they have more top than say a Greenback so they do sound a little scooped to some guys depending on the rig...

You might really like a 55hz G12H30...a pre rola style one, weber makes a 55hz G12H30 clone...they are deeper and bigger sounding than a 75hz G12H30, have more lows and low mids and are real punchy.

Have you tried the regular Celestion G12H30 yet??

Re: Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

I had an amazingly positive experience with a randall George Lynch cab that was loaded with his Emi Super V speakers, which are supposedly based on Fanes. Deep bottom end, smooth mids and top... never mushy. Sounded like "rock" no matter what was thrown at it. Good stuff.

I'd make you a good deal on a set of real Fanes if you want!

Re: Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

Not yet. Seems everyone has V30s or G12Ts anymore, and I've been hesitant to buy a complete set due to the cost of not liking them.

Both V30's and T75's are very modern sounding speakers to me...H30's are very much an old school sound but they are different than greenbacks...more lows, a little more highs, cleaner and punchier but they do have some great lows and low mids and if you get a 55hz version (like the Heritage Celestion or the Weber) there are even more lows and low mids...

Re: Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

Check this out...not the right amp, guitar or music but it is a pretty solid comparison...

V30...H30...T75 and K100 shootout!

Re: Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

Cool. I found what seems to be the extended version (more speakers);

As per usual, I'm drawn to the sound of the G12M and the V30, however I listened to the G12H a lot more carefully than I normally do and I can definitely hear the low midrange fullness you guys are talking about. Probably because the clip isn't so gain heavy that it masks the tone of the speaker...

I think I'm going to go with a set of those first. I think they'd be really good with my Orange, and I think they'd sound good combined with a V30 loaded cab.

A V30/H30 mix can be a deadly sound!

FWIW, the original Orange cabs from the 60's and 70's, the English ones came stock with G12H30, that said at that time they were mostly the 55hz versions.

Re: Dual Rectifier - What Speakers

The G12K100 might do the trick for ya. I use four of those in a Marshall MF400 cab with my Roadster. Little darker than the v30, but still pairs with the amp very well.

I've been itching to try those speakers out, or maybe just hunt down and buy an MF400 cab used if I need another 4x12.
