Dual-slug humbucker.

Would a dual slug-coil humbucker be considered a Shop Floor Custom? Since its just a matter of grabbing a coil from bin "A" instead of bin "B"?

as far as i know yes. they will do dual slugs, dual screws or hex heads or a mix of them at no upcharge.

I would've though all slug coils be wound one way and all screw coils be wound the other; Therefore making it a non noise cancelling pickup?

Thats what I used to think. Actually, all the coils are wound the same. Its the fact that they hook one up out-of-phase that enables the hum-cancelling. Remember, each coil "sees" a different magnet polarity because of the way it lies underneath - thus - back in phase. ;)

are there any tonal differences between the three?

The three? There's a tonal difference between the two. (Slug or adjustable.) The slug tends to have a bit more beef to it. So, I though it might be cool to have an all-beef humbucker.

Edit: Now I see what you mean by "the three". You were refering to Mike's post. :smack:

Re: Dual-slug humbucker.

Artie... I have made a few Double Slug and Double Screw pickups... very subtle response changes... very useful for fine tuning a pickup to the specific instrument... it adds a bit more beef to the tone.

Lately, I have experimented with the polepieces like used in the Invader which also have an interesting response on the tone since the magnetic field is spread out in a broader and less concentrated manner to the strings.

On the Alnico 59/Custom Hybrids, I have cut the screws flush with the bottom of the baseplate on a few to direct more of the magnetic field up to the strings... I am really liking this mod...

Re: Dual-slug humbucker.

Stag Mag is two single coils stuck together

Also what exactly does "more beef" mean in terms of tone? Higher output, or more mids maybe?

Cool. I'll have to try that. I need to take that guitar apart one more time to do a wiring "mod", so I'll cut the screws off then.

btw - I haven't forgotten my hybrid review. I just want to get the words right. ;)

To me, the stud coil has just a bit more output and a bit less treble. As B2R said, its subtle. Perhaps a bit more presence.

Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce....

I think it would be pretty cool to try. I can think of some situations where the added beefiness (is that a word? :laugh2:) would be nice to have.

Re: Dual-slug humbucker.

That gives me an idea. You buy two humbuckers for an HSS guitar. You build one stud/stud hybrid for the bridge. Then you use the remaining two screw coils as singles. (With home-made bases, of course.) Then you use special wiring to be able to enable the original coils in series mode again. The tonal options with that setup could be cool. ;)

Re: Dual-slug humbucker.

remember Jake E Lee used a custom Duncan with double screwcoils in the early 80's .. in the white/black charvelised Fender :)

...or a double screw humbucker with the bottoms cut flush, eh?

That should be closer to double-slug than a normal slug-n-screw bucker, though not quite the same as a double-slug.
