Duckbucker for slide?

I have an esquire I have decided to switch to a slide guitar. The little 59 is just too much bite for what I want out of it. I want something nice and warm, preferably without any cycle 60 Hum. The duckbucker has always intrigued me, It sounds more quacky than warm but that could be a good thing for slide.

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

I've never thought of the Lil' 59 as having bite, and I do think of it as being nice and warm too. The Duckbucker is like a very smooth single coil sound with a bit of quack even when it's in 1,3,5 positions. I'm not sure what you're after, but the Duckbucker seems opposite of it at any rate.

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

To my ears, too 'warm' or 'thick' sounding takes some character away from a 6-string set up for slide.
A 'bluesy' slide sound, almost like a dobro, gets going really well with just a little bit of drive.
I'd go for some edge, and roll off the mids and top if need be. YMMV.

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

I use a full sized 59 for slide in my tele or a p-90 in my Les Paul or 335. Brighter pickups work better for me.

The Lil 59 has too much bite?!!

Not from my experience. It's way warm with very little bite. I have mine wired in parallel to reduce all that warmth some.

Can't imagine a single sized bucker with MORE warmth than the Lil 59. Maybe you should look at the EQ on your amp.

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

Yep, if the lil 59 has too much bite then you'll be MAJORLY disappointed by anything lower output as that will have bite (treble).

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

I should have specified it is a bridge 59 and I was planning to move to a neck pick for slide (hence the duckbucker.) A little 59 is actually not very similar to a 59 it has ceramic magnets and more than twice the ohms of its full sized counter part and is listed as a high output pick. If you don't think it has bite turn it up to show volume and plug it straight into the amp. I want something warm that doesn't distort easily. The pickups i have I want a similar tone to are the Gibson 57 Classic and the Dimarzio PAF. Didn't care for the 59 so I don't want a neck version and I am routed for a single coil so any single coil sized suggestions for a warm humbucker would be appreciated.

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

A Duckbucker in the neck of a tele sounds like an interesting choice and it should work fine. I have one in the middle position of one of my strats and it works pretty well.

Not from my experience. It's way warm with very little bite.

I had one in my tele that I hated, very little body or warmth.

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

^sure you didn't have it wired parallel or singlecoil??

OP I think you might be confusing output and bite...which is treble typically. You can drop output with a lower output pickup, but the treble content will go up due to the lower wind count (and increase in resonant frequency).

You can manipulate both tone and output with your guitar controls and pickup height.

Re: Duckbucker for slide?

OP, consider the STR-3 Tele neck pickup. It's not hum cancelling, but it has a lower peak resonance, is very warm and is stock size and appearance.
